Arsenal stun Lyon to reach First Women’s Champions League Final in 18 Years

Arsenal Women produced a sensational performance to stun Olympique Lyonnais with a 4-1 victory in France on Sunday, securing a 5-3 aggregate win and a place in the 2025 UEFA Women's Champions League Final. The Gunners, needing to overturn a 2-1 first-leg deficit, delivered one of their finest European performances at the Groupama Stadium.

The comeback began early when Lyon goalkeeper Christiane Endler scored an own goal under heavy pressure just five minutes into the second leg. Spain international Mariona Caldentey then added a brilliant second in first-half stoppage time to hand Arsenal a decisive advantage.

Speaking after the match, Caldentey said: "I just have to put it out there and fight 'til the end and see how it goes."

Immediately after the restart, England’s Alessia Russo struck within 27 seconds to stretch Arsenal’s lead even further. The visitors capitalized again in the 63rd minute when Australian forward Caitlin Foord pounced on a defensive blunder to fire home Arsenal’s fourth of the night.

While Melchie Dumornay, who netted Lyon's first-leg winner, pulled one back for the hosts, it proved too little too late as Arsenal comfortably saw out the match to reach their first Champions League final since winning the competition — then known as the UEFA Women’s Cup — in 2007.

Arsenal Set for Lisbon Showdown Against Barcelona

The North London club will now face Spanish giants FC Barcelona Femeni in the final scheduled for May 24 in Lisbon. Barcelona secured their spot earlier on Sunday, cruising past Chelsea with a dominant 4-1 win to complete an 8-2 aggregate victory.

Barcelona, the reigning champions, head into the final as overwhelming favorites, seeking their third consecutive Women’s Champions League crown and fourth overall title. Stay updated on Barcelona Femeni’s journey at Sportsligue.com.

Meanwhile, Arsenal’s triumph is even more remarkable considering Lyon’s dominance — the French side had won every Champions League match this season until Sunday and were chasing their ninth final appearance in the past decade.

Lyon Falter Despite Strong Start and Milestone for Wendie Renard

Despite the return of club legend Wendie Renard for her 500th appearance, Lyon could not find their rhythm. The stadium, which saw a modest turnout, watched in shock as the eight-time European champions fell behind to a bizarre own goal.

Damaris Egurrola attempted to clear an Arsenal corner but only succeeded in deflecting the ball off Endler and into her own net. Arsenal seized the momentum, and Caldentey’s thunderous finish from a Russo lay-off right before halftime turned the tie on its head.

After Russo’s early second-half strike and Foord’s opportunistic goal following Vanessa Gilles' slip, the damage was done. Although Dumornay’s late goal offered a glimmer of hope, Arsenal’s resilient defense shut the door on any Lyon comeback.
