Arsenal teen Lewis-Skelly Impresses with fearless performance in derby debut against Spurs

Arsenal's 18-year-old left-back Myles Lewis-Skelly faced a significant challenge against Tottenham Hotspur, one of the Premier League's most prolific scoring teams, yet the young player excelled in a morale-boosting derby victory.

With three senior defenders sidelined due to injury, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta had no choice but to call upon Lewis-Skelly, who had developed as a midfielder in the academy, to step into a defensive role.

Arsenal was experiencing a difficult phase this season, having suffered consecutive defeats in both the League Cup and FA Cup, making the match against Spurs a formidable challenge, especially given Ange Postecoglou's team averaged over two goals per game in the league.

Lewis-Skelly became the second-youngest player in Arsenal's history to participate in a league derby against Spurs, yet he appeared unfazed by the high-stakes environment.

Rather than shy away from the pressure, he rose to the occasion, knowing the importance of the match for the club's season.

Just two minutes into the game, Lewis-Skelly demonstrated his offensive skills by intercepting the ball high up the pitch, advancing through the midfield, and nearly setting up Raheem Sterling, who was thwarted by the advancing goalkeeper.

The left-back also faced the formidable challenge of dealing with Spurs' talented winger Dejan Kulusevski, but he exhibited remarkable maturity, composure, and strength in handling everything that came his way, earning Arteta's commendation for his 'phenomenal' display.

"It is quite uncommon to see an 18-year-old competing against Kulusevski and (Brennan) Johnson in a significant London derby for the first time, performing with such composure, attitude, and emotional control," Arteta remarked to the media.

"He instills great pride in everyone at the club. He has been part of our system for a considerable time... He was prepared early on, albeit in a different position, as he has never played as a full-back before."

Lewis-Skelly made his debut four months ago during stoppage time in a spirited draw against Manchester City, where he notably confronted Erling Haaland, who bluntly inquired about the young player's identity.

However, it is his recent performances that have truly brought Lewis-Skelly into the spotlight. Teammate Declan Rice commended him, stating that the player seemed "engineered in a lab," particularly praising his contribution in the 2-1 victory.

"For someone at just 18 years of age to perform at this level is astonishing. The young players today exhibit no fear whatsoever," Rice remarked, suggesting that Lewis-Skelly could soon represent England.

"Several times in the second half, he skillfully used his physique to evade opponents. He possesses a strength reminiscent of Moussa Dembele."

As he exited the field to a standing ovation in the 87th minute, the beaming young player encouraged the home supporters to amplify their cheers, as Arsenal climbed to second place, narrowing the gap to leaders Liverpool in the title race.

"I'm experiencing every possible emotion; I'm on cloud nine... I was once a child watching these derbies and understand their significance to the fans; it means everything. To have this experience today fills me with joy," he expressed.

"This match holds greater importance... I'm pleased to have contributed to the team's success. Securing the three points and building momentum was paramount, and I am satisfied with my performance."
