Arsenal's defensive woes continue: Saliba injury adds to frustration after 2-2 draw with Aston Villa

Arsenal’s title aspirations took another hit on Saturday as they dropped two crucial Premier League points in a 2-2 draw against Aston Villa. Adding to the disappointment was the absence of key defender William Saliba, who missed the match due to a hamstring injury sustained in the midweek 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.
Saliba’s importance to Arsenal’s defense cannot be overstated. The Frenchman’s injury is a significant concern, especially considering his absence with a back issue last season was pivotal in derailing Arsenal’s title push against Manchester City.
Manager Mikel Arteta acknowledged the severity of the situation, saying:
"I think tomorrow we will have more information, we will have more tests on him and we will be more clear about it. For sure (we are worried), especially with the numbers we have in the squad and looking at our bench. Very worried."
Arteta was forced to make defensive adjustments, moving Jurrien Timber to center-back alongside Gabriel and deploying midfielder Thomas Partey as a makeshift right-back. Despite these changes, Arsenal initially took a commanding 2-0 lead with goals from Gabriel Martinelli and Kai Havertz. However, Aston Villa clawed their way back, with Youri Tielemans narrowing the gap and Ollie Watkins equalizing with a stunning volley off Matty Cash’s pinpoint cross.
Arteta praised his team’s overall performance but expressed frustration over their defensive lapses:
"We can fault ourselves as well because defending the way we did, especially with one of the goals, it cannot be part of our game if we want to be at the highest level in this country. The rest, what else can I ask the team to do against a really good side?"
Saliba’s importance to Arsenal’s success is backed by statistics. The Gunners have a 72% win rate with the defender in the starting lineup, which drops to just 38% in games he has missed. Understandably, Arteta is eager to learn the results of Saliba’s scans and may need to explore options in the January transfer window.
Second-placed Arsenal now sit six points behind league leaders Liverpool, who also have a game in hand. Arteta hinted at possible reinforcements, stating:
"You look at the performances, I don't know how many teams are playing at this level in the league. When you look at the bench, probably you say I think we are very short."
As Arsenal look to stay in the title race, Saliba’s fitness and potential squad reinforcements will likely play a decisive role in the second half of the season.
