Aryna Sabalenka ends Svitolina’s streak, sets up Madrid Open Final against Gauff

World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka stormed into the final of the 2025 Madrid Open after a commanding straight-sets win over Elina Svitolina, defeating the Ukrainian 6-3, 7-5 in Thursday's semi-final showdown. With the victory, Sabalenka snapped Svitolina’s impressive 11-match unbeaten clay-court run, which included a flawless set record.

Sabalenka asserted early dominance on Manolo Santana Stadium’s red clay, breaking twice to take the first set comfortably. Though she faltered while serving for the match at 5-4 in the second, the Belarusian immediately broke back and sealed the match on her second attempt after 92 minutes of intense action.

This win marks Sabalenka’s fourth final in five years in Madrid, having lifted the trophy in 2021 and 2023. The reigning US Open and Australian Open champion also becomes the first WTA player to reach 30 main-draw wins in 2025, underlining her exceptional form on tour.

Up next is a blockbuster final against Coco Gauff, the world No. 4, who stunned defending champion Iga Swiatek earlier in the day with a dominant 6-1, 6-1 display. Gauff holds a narrow 5-4 edge in her head-to-head with Sabalenka, including a clay-court win in Rome and a recent triumph at the 2024 WTA Finals in Riyadh.

The Madrid Open 2025 final promises a thrilling clash between two of the game's biggest stars, as Sabalenka aims for her third Madrid title and Gauff seeks her first on Spanish soil.
