Aryna Sabalenka overpowers American Jessica Pegula to win Cincinnati Open

Aryna Sabalenka, aged 26, utilized her formidable serve to defeat American Jessica Pegula, 30, with a score of 6-3, 7-5, thereby claiming the Cincinnati Open title on Monday. This victory serves as a significant statement as the final major tournament of the year approaches in New York.
The two-time Australian Open champion demonstrated remarkable prowess, conceding only nine points on her serve and delivering 10 aces, despite experiencing some nerves towards the end of the second set. This triumph marks her sixth WTA 1000 title.
Pegula, who had recently showcased strong form by defending her title in Toronto, encountered difficulties with her serve, resulting in five double faults.
Sabalenka secured a break in the fourth game when Pegula sent a forehand into the net, subsequently maintaining her momentum with a service game to love in the fifth. She concluded the first set with an unreturnable serve.
In the second set, she unleashed a series of powerful forehands to achieve another break in the opening game. However, she allowed Pegula a solitary break point due to a double fault and several unforced errors in the tenth game.
Nevertheless, Sabalenka quickly broke back and celebrated by blowing kisses to the audience after compelling her opponent into an error on match point. Following this victory, she will ascend one position to number two in the rankings ahead of the US Open, commencing next week.
This performance has dispelled any lingering doubts regarding Sabalenka's status as one of the leading contenders in Flushing Meadows, despite having missed Wimbledon earlier this season due to a shoulder injury.
She navigated the Cincinnati tournament without losing a single set, including a match against world number one Iga Swiatek, and is poised to seek revenge in New York after finishing as the runner-up last year.
I would like to express my gratitude to my team; we have faced numerous challenges, yet we have consistently persevered and sought to enhance our skills. I am truly pleased to have you alongside me, Sabalenka remarked during her on-court address.
Pegula, during an on-court interview following her semi-final, inadvertently referred to the Belarusian as "Serena" instead of "Aryna." On Monday, she humorously noted that the error involving the 23-time Grand Slam champion was quite appropriate.
"Your serving today reminded me of Serena (Williams)," she commented during the trophy presentation. "Perhaps I was hoping for Serena rather than Aryna."
