AS Monaco 2-1 Barcelona: Monaco defeat 10-man Barca to get European campaign off to dream start

AS Monaco commenced their UEFA Champions League (UCL) group stage campaign with a 2-1 triumph over a Barcelona side reduced to ten men, marking their eighth victory in the last ten home encounters against Spanish teams.
This result provided Monaco with an ideal beginning to their first UCL group stage match since the 2018/19 season.
Just over ten minutes into the match, a poor pass from Marc-André ter Stegen put Eric García in a precarious situation. When Takumi Minamino seized the opportunity and dispossessed García, the latter had no choice but to foul him as the last defender, leading to a red card being issued.
Monaco quickly capitalized on their numerical advantage, with Maghnes Akliouche's impressive run culminating in a powerful strike at the near post just minutes later.
However, Barcelona responded in a similar manner. Despite being a player down, the 17-year-old prodigy Lamine Yamal took control of the match, cutting in from the right to score a rapid equalizer.
Wilfried Singo nearly restored Monaco's lead before halftime, but his goal was disallowed for offside. Consequently, despite their efforts, Monaco entered the halftime break with the score level.
The second half mirrored the first, with Monaco dominating possession. However, Vanderson's attempt was thwarted by a full-stretch save from Ter Stegen, illustrating the difficulty Monaco faced in regaining the lead.
Ultimately, Barcelona's defense faltered under pressure with less than twenty minutes remaining, allowing substitute George Ilenikhena to break through and score, putting Monaco back in front on his Champions League debut.
It was yet another substitution made by Adi Hütter that nearly secured the victory for the team, as Folarin Balogun came close to scoring shortly thereafter. His powerful shot aimed at the near post was skillfully denied by the outstretched arm of Ter Stegen.
In terms of match statistics, the Spanish giants were granted a second chance just five minutes before the end when Iñigo Martínez brought down Balogun in the penalty area. However, after reviewing the incident on the pitchside monitor, the referee reversed his original decision.
Nonetheless, this did not impact the final outcome, as Monaco managed to maintain their remarkable unbeaten streak at the beginning of the season.
