Astana 1-3 Chelsea: Blues brave freezing conditions to down hosts

Chelsea maintained their perfect record in this season's UEFA Conference League (UECL) by securing a 3-1 victory against Kazakhstani champions Astana in an away match.

Any Chelsea supporter who considered the journey to Baku, Azerbaijan, for the 2019 UEFA Europa League final to be excessive will likely find the trip to Eastern Kazakhstan even less appealing.

Due to renovations at their home stadium in the capital, Astana is currently hosting their European matches in Almaty, located less than 200 miles from the Chinese border.

The total distance for a round trip from London to Almaty Central Stadium exceeds 7,000 miles, and with the match taking place in frigid temperatures of -11°C, even the Chelsea players might have preferred the milder climate of Southern England.

Fortunately, with their advancement to the knockout stages assured, Enzo Maresca was able to rest most of his key players and instead field several members of the fringe squad.

Despite the significant rotation, the Blues dominated the first half completely.

Tyrique George narrowly missed the target, and Pedro Neto had a shot saved by Mukhammedzhan Seysen before Marc Guiu opened the scoring within the first 15 minutes with an impressive solo effort.

The visitors doubled their lead before the midway point of the first half when Aleksandr Marochkin inadvertently redirected Neto's cross into his own goal, and a third goal was added shortly before halftime as Renato Veiga headed in a corner from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.

Astana struggled to cope with Chelsea's technical skills and physical presence; however, they managed to find a moment of celebration just before halftime when captain Marin Tamasov struck the ball off the post to narrow the scoreline.

Upon returning from the break, Astana displayed a revitalized spirit and even challenged Filip Jörgensen with a powerful shot from Tomasov. Nevertheless, Chelsea soon began to assert their dominance.

Carney Chukwuemeka, George, and Guiu all came close to finding the net, while Dewsbury-Hall's attempt went off target. Ultimately, Maresca's squad did not need to score again to secure victory, thanks to their strong performance in the first half.

This outcome solidifies their position at the top of the UECL league phase table, with a spot in the top eight now nearly assured due to their significant goal difference.

For Astana, this match was always going to be a challenging endeavor, and they can take solace in the fact that the defeat was not by a larger margin. After five matches, they have accumulated four points and remain in contention for advancement to the play-off round.
