Aston Villa 0-0 Juventus: Late VAR drama denies Villans in stalemate

Aston Villa and Juventus played to a thrilling 0-0 stalemate at a vibrant Villa Park, with Unai Emery's squad unable to end a seven-match winless streak that has persisted since their last UEFA Champions League home victory against Bologna.

While Villa's notable triumph against Bayern Munich earlier in the league phase required a remarkable defensive display, the initial moments of this match indicated that they might capitalize on a weakened Juventus team.

The home crowd celebrated every successful pass, and they nearly reaped the rewards when Pau Torres headed just over the bar from a corner taken by Leon Bailey.

Juventus posed a threat in attack, particularly through the agile movements of Francisco Conceicao and Kenan Yildiz, with Yildiz narrowly missing the target after making a penetrating run toward goal.

The match began to gain momentum after the half-hour mark, as Villa recorded their first shot on target through Ollie Watkins, who, after receiving a pass from Boubacar Kamara, tested Michele Di Gregorio at his near post.

As the game opened up, there were opportunities for Timothy Weah and Conceicao, but the most significant chance of the half occurred in stoppage time. Pierre Kalulu fouled Watkins on the edge of the penalty area, leading Lucas Digne to deliver a delicate free-kick that agonizingly struck the top of Di Gregorio's crossbar.

The second half commenced with a lack of quality in the final third, but it was Emiliano Martinez's exceptional goalkeeping that kept the scoreline unchanged.

A cross found Conceicao at the back post, whose close-range header was brilliantly saved off the line by the quick reflexes of the Yashin Trophy winner.

Building on this momentum, Villa came close to scoring as well, with John McGinn's low shot being cleared off the line by Manuel Locatelli.

These clear-cut chances were followed by a tense final 20 minutes, but the match was poised for a dramatic conclusion.

Youri Tielemans delivered a free-kick during the final moments of stoppage time, which was poorly assessed by Di Gregorio and subsequently converted by Morgan Rogers. However, VAR determined that Diego Carlos had committed a foul on the goalkeeper amidst the chaos.

Nonetheless, the outcome was favorable for both teams, especially for Villa, who achieved their fourth clean sheet in five matches during the UCL league phase.

Defensive solidity could prove crucial for Juventus this season, as 11 out of their 18 matches under Thiago Motta have resulted in their opponents failing to score.
