Aston Villa 1-0 Arsenal: McGinn strike sinks Gunners and sees Villa two points off top

Following their impressive victory over treble-winners Manchester City earlier in the week, Aston Villa entered the match with high spirits and continued their momentum by taking an early lead. John McGinn capitalized on their first significant chance, skillfully turning and firing into the top corner to secure his sixth goal of the season.
However, Villa's strong start was short-lived as Arsenal began to assert their presence in the game. Gabriel Martinelli came close to scoring with a lob that was cleared off the line, while Martin Odegaard had an excellent opportunity to equalize before halftime, but Martinez read his shot well and made a good save from close range.
Arsenal carried their dominance into the second half, and Gabriel Jesus appealed for a penalty after being seemingly kicked on the back of his leg. However, VAR determined that the challenge did not warrant intervention.
After an impressive first-half performance, Martinez made a mistake by flapping at a corner, allowing Ollie Watkins to deflect the ball onto his own post. Odegaard later missed another golden opportunity by firing wide from Kai Havertz's cross.
Villa had a rare attacking moment when Lucas Digne's shot was saved by David Raya. Soon after, Bukayo Saka had the ball in the net after rounding Martinez, but the goal was disallowed for offside.
Watkins, who had previously scored four goals in six matches against Arsenal, posed a threat on the counterattack and forced Raya into another smart save, boosting his confidence after his recent errors against Luton.
Despite Arsenal's belief that they would find an equalizer, they were denied again just before stoppage time when Havertz's goal was ruled out for a handball in the build-up.
It was simply not Arsenal's day, and Villa held on to secure another memorable victory against a fellow title contender.
With just two points off the top, Aston Villa has firmly positioned themselves in the race for the title. Meanwhile, Mikel Arteta, who was serving a touchline ban, has some strategic contemplation ahead.
