Aston Villa 2-0 Bologna: McGinn and Duran on target to lead Villans past visitors

Aston Villa maintained their flawless beginning to the UEFA Champions League season with a commanding 2-0 victory over Bologna at Villa Park, marking the first time since Leicester in the 2016/17 season that a debutant in the Champions League has not conceded a goal in their first three matches.

The atmosphere at Villa Park was electric as fans anticipated another memorable evening of European football. However, they had to exercise patience, as the home team struggled to create significant scoring opportunities in the first half, despite being a persistent threat.

The dynamic Ian Maatsen consistently pressured Riccardo Orsolini into focusing on his defensive responsibilities, while Morgan Rogers skillfully navigated the midfield. The closest the home side came to scoring in the first half was from a set-piece situation.

Jhon Duran connected with a corner, directing his header towards the goal, but Lukasz Skorupski was alert enough to deflect the ball away from a congested penalty area.

Bologna, in search of the form that served them well last season, found themselves defending for extended periods during the first half, yet they managed to create a few chances of their own.

Thijs Dallinga forced a save from Emiliano Martinez following impressive play by Dan Ndoye, and the Dutch forward missed another opportunity from the edge of the box after Leon Bailey's misplaced pass presented him with a chance.

The second half quickly intensified, with Bailey sending a half-volley wide, while Stefan Posch found space at the edge of the box but also missed the target with his shot.

The opening goal came in an unusual manner for Unai Emery’s squad, as John McGinn’s inswinging free-kick from the right wing was contested fiercely, yet the ball sailed over all players and into the far corner of Skorupski’s net.

The Italian team felt aggrieved for not being awarded a free-kick in the lead-up to the goal and struggled to recover from the setback of conceding.

Just ten minutes after the first goal, the match was effectively decided when Duran extended Aston Villa’s lead.

The Colombian player, in excellent form, calmly finished a low cross delivered by Rogers, capping off a sequence initiated by a superb long pass from Diego Carlos.

This marked the concluding moment of yet another remarkable European evening for the English team, who are making a notable impact in their return to the competition after a 42-year hiatus.
