Aston Villa 2-1 Lille: Villans maintain perfect home record in narrow first-leg victory

Aston Villa preserved their perfect home record in the UEFA Europa Conference League by securing a narrow 2-1 win in the first leg of their quarter-final against Lille.

Lille faced an early setback in their inaugural quarter-final appearance in UEFA competitions, allowing the opening goal within 15 minutes at Villa Park.

Ollie Watkins, left unmarked, sneaked in at the far post to score from John McGinn's deep corner, marking his 25th goal of the season.

Following this, the French team came close to equalizing midway through the first half when Edon Zhegrova received Nabil Bentaleb's long pass, only to have his attempt saved by Emiliano Martinez.

Martinez was called into action twice more before halftime, making crucial saves in one-on-one situations against Bafode Diakite and Lille's top scorer Jonathan David.

After regrouping during the break, Unai Emery's team started the second half with purpose, with Lucas Chevalier making a strong save to deny Leon Bailey from scoring.

Nevertheless, Lille's goalkeeper was unable to prevent John McGinn from doubling Villa's lead before the hour mark. A short corner was played to the edge of the box, where McGinn was waiting to slot a low shot into the net.

Similar to the first goal, Paulo Fonseca's squad responded positively to conceding, with Gabriel Gudmundsson producing a fantastic first-time finish, only for his effort to be disallowed for offside.

Lille encountered further disappointment as Martínez displayed excellent reflexes to deny Gudmundsson's diving header, followed by another impressive save to frustrate Hakon Arnar Haraldsson from the resulting corner.

In the 84th minute, the visitors' determination finally yielded results when Diakité leapt highest to connect with a near-post corner, directing his header past a helpless Martínez.

Although Lille managed to pull a goal back, they were unable to avoid their first loss in the Europa Conference League, leaving them with a deficit to overcome in France next week.
