Aston Villa 2-1 Manchester City: Duran, Rogers on target as Villans add to Cityzens' woes

A dominant one-sided display propelled Aston Villa to a 2-1 victory over Manchester City in the Premier League, exacerbating City's woes as they have now secured only one win in their last 12 matches, suffering more defeats during this stretch than in their previous 107 games.

Both teams, having started the season strongly, have recently experienced a downturn, and this match provided a chance for them to revitalize their respective campaigns.

Aston Villa appeared more likely to break their poor form, starting the match with great energy.

Jhon Duran had a clear opportunity when Josko Gvardiol misplayed a pass, allowing the Colombian striker to advance on goal; however, he faltered, and his initial shot was saved by Stefan Ortega.

From the subsequent corner, Ortega made a remarkable save, deflecting a header from Pau Torres onto the crossbar.

Despite these warnings, Manchester City could not capitalize, and Unai Emery’s side took the lead in the 16th minute. Morgan Rogers penetrated the City defense and delivered a pass to Duran, who calmly finished past a stranded Ortega.

After going behind, Pep Guardiola’s team began to assert themselves, controlling possession with former Villa player Jack Grealish heavily involved. However, as has been the case in recent weeks, City struggled to translate their possession into meaningful scoring opportunities.

Gvardiol had a chance to equalize before halftime, but his header, set up by Grealish, was always rising.

The second half commenced in a manner reminiscent of the first, with Villa quickly asserting themselves and creating several chances early on.

Matty Cash first struck the side netting following a swift counter-attack, and shortly after, Duran broke through again, only to have his goal disallowed for offside.

Villa maintained complete control, and City appeared sluggish as Rogers found space in the box, striking the post with a low shot around the hour mark.

Guardiola's team failed to find their rhythm in the second half, allowing Villa to rightfully extend their lead in the 65th minute. Rogers advanced into the City half, linking up with John McGinn before deftly placing the ball into the far corner of the net.

Aside from a speculative long-range attempt by Phil Foden, the visitors struggled to pose a significant threat to Emiliano Martínez. In contrast, Villa appeared poised to secure a third goal, with Ollie Watkins having a shot saved at the near post by Ortega.

Foden did manage to score a goal in stoppage time—his first in the Premier League this season but it served merely as a consolation. Emery's side successfully secured three points against the defending champions, whose defensive performance continues to decline week by week.

This victory marks Villa's second win in 18 encounters, propelling them above City in the league standings to fifth place, while the Villans remain unbeaten in their last eight home league matches since their opening-day loss to Arsenal.
