Aston Villa 2-2 Liverpool: Reds held by Villa as title race intensifies

Premier League leaders Liverpool were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw against Aston Villa on Wednesday after Trent Alexander-Arnold’s second-half equalizer salvaged a point. The result extended Liverpool’s lead at the top to eight points, but a missed opportunity to go 10 clear leaves the title race wide open.

Mohamed Salah gave Liverpool the lead in the 28th minute, capitalizing on a defensive error, but Villa responded before halftime with goals from Youri Tielemans and Ollie Watkins. The visitors pushed for an equalizer in the second half, with Diogo Jota striking the crossbar before Alexander-Arnold’s deflected shot leveled the score.

Liverpool had chances to regain the lead, most notably through substitute Darwin Núñez, who missed a golden opportunity. Villa nearly snatched a last-gasp winner when Donyell Malen’s shot grazed the post in stoppage time.

Despite the draw, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk acknowledged the importance of moving forward. “We are a bit disappointed, we had the chances to win the game and took a bit of a risk at the end,” he said. “We take a point and move on. We have a big one on Sunday.”

The result means Arsenal, sitting in second place, can cut the gap to five points with a win against West Ham on Saturday before Liverpool faces a crucial showdown with Manchester City.

Villa, currently ninth with 39 points, remain five points adrift of the top four. The home side initially struggled against Liverpool’s early dominance, with goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez making an important save and Tyrone Mings blocking a key chance.

Marcus Rashford, making his first start for Villa since his loan move from Manchester United, briefly thought he had put his side ahead when his cross deflected into the net, only for it to be ruled out for offside.

Liverpool took advantage of Villa’s defensive lapse when Andres Garcia gifted possession to Jota, who squared it for Salah to fire into the roof of the net. However, Villa struck back in the 37th minute when Rashford’s free-kick caused havoc in the box, and Tielemans capitalized with a clinical volley past Alisson.

Jota squandered a chance to restore Liverpool’s lead soon after, and Villa punished the visitors in first-half stoppage time. With Liverpool sitting back, Lucas Digne delivered a pinpoint cross that Watkins headed past Alisson, putting Villa ahead at the break.

Liverpool regained momentum in the second half, and after Jota rattled the crossbar, they found the equalizer. Salah set up Alexander-Arnold, whose shot took a decisive deflection off Mings, wrong-footing Martínez.

The visitors continued to push for a winner, but Núñez’s shocking miss from close range left manager Arne Slot visibly frustrated on the touchline. “You can understand there’s one person in the dressing room that feels quite, quite down. You know who that is, I think,” Slot said, referring to Núñez.

Villa nearly stole the win in the dying moments, but Malen’s effort rolled just wide. While Liverpool missed a chance to extend their lead further, they remain in control of the title race ahead of a pivotal weekend in the Premier League.
