Aston Villa 3-2 Paris Saint-Germain (4-5 agg): PSG edge past Villa in Champions League thriller to keep title hopes alive

Paris St Germain held off a dramatic Aston Villa comeback to book their place in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals, progressing 5-4 on aggregate despite a 3-2 defeat in a pulsating second leg at Villa Park on Tuesday night.
With a 3-1 cushion from the first leg, PSG appeared to be cruising towards the final four when fullbacks Achraf Hakimi and Nuno Mendes struck within the opening 30 minutes, finishing off slick counter-attacks that silenced the home crowd and put the French side 5-1 ahead overall.
But Aston Villa roared back into the tie, starting with a deflected Youri Tielemans goal in the 34th minute. The second half saw an electric two-minute spell where John McGinn and Ezri Konsa both found the net, cutting the aggregate deficit to just one goal and igniting belief among the home fans.
Gianluigi Donnarumma proved decisive for PSG, pulling off a string of superb saves in a frantic final half-hour, including key stops against Marcus Rashford, Tielemans, and Marco Asensio — who is currently on loan from PSG.

"Aston Villa made it difficult for us but we did what we had to do," said PSG captain Marquinhos.
"It's such a difficult competition but we're getting better and better, and we're proving that we're such a good team. It's going to be such a difficult semi-final, whether it's Arsenal or Real Madrid, but of course there is belief that this Paris St Germain team can go all the way and win it."
Despite PSG’s dominance in Ligue 1 — where they've already clinched a fourth straight title — and their first-leg advantage, Unai Emery's Villa side showed no signs of backing down, especially at home where they were unbeaten in 17 matches across all competitions. Backed by a raucous crowd that included Prince William, the Premier League outfit came agonizingly close to pulling off a historic upset.
"Very proud of the boys, of what we've done tonight," said Konsa. "Obviously the two goals at the start killed us. But we showed great belief, great character to get back into the game. But unfortunately it wasn't enough."
While Villa earned a standing ovation for their spirited display, PSG’s traveling fans celebrated their team’s progress into the semi-finals, where they await the winner of Wednesday’s clash between Real Madrid and Arsenal.
