Aston Villa 4-1 Newcastle: Watkins fires Villa back into Champions League hunt

Ollie Watkins turned frustration into firepower as Aston Villa delivered a stunning 4-1 win over top-four rivals Newcastle United, reigniting their push for Champions League qualification.

Just days after bowing out of the UEFA Champions League against Paris Saint-Germain, Unai Emery’s side bounced back emphatically. Watkins opened the scoring inside 33 seconds, set up a crucial second, and led a relentless Villa performance that left Newcastle shell-shocked.

With this sixth consecutive Premier League victory, Aston Villa now sit sixth, level on points with fifth-placed Nottingham Forest and just two points behind third-placed Newcastle, as the race for Europe intensifies.

Fastest Goal, Fiery Display: Watkins Makes His Mark

Watkins wasted no time making an impact. After a miscue from Sandro Tonali, Youri Tielemans set up Watkins to fire home a deflected shot off Fabian Schar, recording Villa’s fastest Premier League goal this season.

"I definitely had something to prove after missing out midweek. I was fuming with myself but I channelled the anger," said Watkins, who now shares Villa’s all-time Premier League goalscoring record with Gabriel Agbonlahor (74 goals).

The England international nearly doubled his tally with a thunderous strike off the underside of the crossbar minutes later.

Schar Equalises, But Villa Take Control

Despite Watkins’ dominance, Newcastle equalised in the 18th minute, with Schar heading in a Harvey Barnes cross through the legs of Emiliano Martinez. It was Newcastle’s only real highlight in an otherwise frustrating evening for the visitors.

Watkins continued to torment the Magpies, heading another effort off the post before Ian Maatsen restored Villa’s lead in the 64th minute. The Dutchman’s cool finish capped a brilliant team move involving Marco Asensio’s sweeping pass and a clever assist from Watkins.

Late Blitz Seals Villa Dominance

Villa’s intensity didn’t drop. In the 73rd minute, Jacob Ramsey’s low cross deflected off Dan Burn into his own net for 3-1. Two minutes later, substitute Amadou Onana put the game beyond doubt with a thunderous strike into the top corner from the edge of the area.

“We showed character. The fans brought incredible energy, and we matched that on the pitch,” said Unai Emery.
“The grip was coming to us. Around here, a performance like this is extremely satisfying.”

Ramsey nearly added a fifth, hitting the post in the 80th minute as Villa Park continued to erupt with each attack.

Champions League Qualification Race Tightens

With five matches remaining, Aston Villa’s impressive form—10 wins in their last 11 matches across all competitions—has thrust them into the heart of the Champions League qualification conversation.

Upcoming fixtures include away games at Manchester City and Bournemouth, both crucial for their European hopes.

Meanwhile, Newcastle’s six-game winning streak came to an end. They remain third but will need a response when they host Ipswich Town next Saturday.

“Disappointed but I'm fine. It’s been a good run but this was a wake-up call,” said Newcastle’s Jason Tindall, deputising again for Eddie Howe, still recovering from pneumonia.
