Aston Villa 4-2 Celtic: Villans defeat Celtic in six-goal thriller as both sides progress

An exhilarating UEFA Champions League (UCL) encounter witnessed Aston Villa secure a place among the top eight in the league phase standings, thereby ensuring advancement to the last 16 following a 4-2 triumph over Celtic, who qualified through the play-offs.
A 1-0 defeat to AS Monaco had previously caused Villa to fall out of the top eight prior to their final league phase match against Celtic. However, a rapid start at Villa Park propelled the home team back into the vital positions in the live standings.
Within three minutes, a seamless exchange between Youri Tielemans and Jacob Ramsey allowed the latter to break down the left flank, where he delivered a low cross into the box that was skillfully finished by Morgan Rogers for his inaugural UCL goal.
Just under two minutes later, Rogers increased his tally, attempting a shot from the edge of the area that deflected off a defender, eluding Kasper Schmeichel and finding the top corner.
The visitors found themselves under significant pressure, nearly conceding a third when Ramsey struck the post, with the ball ricocheting off Schmeichel’s ankle.
Shortly thereafter, a counter-attack led by Ramsey was directed to Ollie Watkins, whose effort was cleared off the line by Alistair Johnston.
Despite Celtic's limited offensive threats up to that point, a pair of rapid goals from Adam Idah stunned the home supporters.
With space on the left, Greg Taylor delivered a cross that was inadvertently redirected by lifelong Celtic supporter John McGinn, allowing Idah to finish with an inventive strike.
Seizing the momentum, the Bhoys equalized before halftime through a well-executed play, culminating in Reo Hatate assisting Idah for a powerful finish.
With the match finely balanced after the interval, a draw would be of little benefit to either team, resulting in an engaging and open contest.
On the verge of a hat-trick, Rogers sent a low shot wide of the far post, yet he played a pivotal role as Villa regained the lead shortly thereafter, fending off a challenge to initiate a counter-attack.
McGinn played a crucial role in the offensive sequence as he surged forward and delivered a pass to Ramsey, who subsequently set up Watkins for a composed finish.
Remarkably, the England international had the chance to score again shortly after when Schmeichel made a careless mistake, but the goalkeeper redeemed himself with an impressive save to thwart Watkins.
The situation intensified when referee Clément Turpin awarded a penalty, ruling that Auston Trusty had unfairly brought down Watkins.
Presented with the chance to secure his second goal, Watkins lost his balance while taking the penalty, sending the ball soaring over the crossbar as he fell.
The Villa forward faced another obstacle as the Celtic goalkeeper denied him once more, while Hatate's long-range attempt went wide. In search of a dramatic conclusion to his 100th European match as a manager, Brendan Rogers opted for a double substitution.
The Scottish team remained resilient, with Idah forcing a save from a challenging angle just minutes before Schmeichel blocked a close-range effort from Rogers.
In the end, the thrilling contest concluded with Villa emerging victorious, as Watkins intercepted the ball in the penalty area and assisted Rogers for his first senior hat-trick.
Due to favorable results in other matches, Unai Emery’s team will advance directly to the round of 16, while Celtic will participate in the play-off draw on Friday.
