Atalanta 1-1 Torino: La Dea held by Torino as title hopes take a hit

Atalanta’s Serie A title ambitions suffered a setback on Saturday as they were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw at home against Torino. A missed penalty by Mateo Retegui denied the hosts a golden opportunity to secure all three points.

The draw leaves Atalanta third in the Serie A standings with 47 points, trailing second-placed Inter Milan by three points, though Inter have played two fewer matches and face AC Milan on Sunday. League leaders Napoli, who take on AS Roma, sit six points ahead. Meanwhile, Torino remain in 11th place with 27 points.

Atalanta dominated possession for much of the first half but struggled to create clear-cut chances. Their only early breakthrough was a disallowed goal by Raoul Bellanova due to handball.

The deadlock was broken in the 35th minute when Berat Djimsiti rose above his marker to power a header past the goalkeeper from a corner, putting Atalanta ahead. However, the lead was short-lived as Torino responded just five minutes later.

A well-delivered free kick from Valentino Lazaro found Guillermo Maripan at the back post, where the defender headed home from close range to level the score.

The second half saw limited goal-scoring opportunities. Substitute Juan Cuadrado tried his luck from distance twice but failed to seriously trouble Torino goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic.

Atalanta had a golden chance to reclaim the lead in the 74th minute after Adrien Tameze fouled Retegui inside the box. However, Retegui’s tame penalty was comfortably saved by Milinkovic-Savic, a moment that ultimately defined the game.

Despite late pressure from Atalanta, they struggled to break down Torino’s defense and failed to pose a significant threat for a winning goal.

One positive note for Atalanta fans was the long-awaited return of Gianluca Scamacca, who came off the bench late in the game. The striker had been sidelined since pre-season due to a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament, making this his first appearance of the season. However, there was no dream comeback moment as Atalanta were forced to settle for a point.

With Inter and Napoli still to play, Atalanta’s title hopes now hang in the balance as they look to bounce back in the coming fixtures.
