Atalanta 1-3 Club Brugge (2-5 agg): Talbi shines as Brugge stun La Dea to reach Champions League last 16

Club Brugge booked their place in the Champions League last 16 with a stunning 3-1 victory over Atalanta on Tuesday, securing a commanding 5-2 aggregate win. Teenage sensation Chemsdine Talbi played a starring role, scoring twice in the first half before Ferran Jutgla added a third, putting the Belgian side in control before a tense second period.
Brugge wasted no time making an impact at the Stadio di Bergamo, extending their narrow first-leg lead within three minutes. Talbi showed composure beyond his years, skillfully creating space before firing a precise shot into the bottom corner. The 19-year-old struck again midway through the first half, capitalizing on a rebound after Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi parried a shot from Christos Tzolis. Jutgla then compounded the Italian side’s misery with a powerful low strike in first-half stoppage time, punishing Atalanta on the counter.
The hosts responded after the break, bringing on Ademola Lookman in a desperate bid to turn the tide. The Nigerian international made an immediate impact, scoring within 35 seconds of his introduction by steering home a cross from Davide Zappacosta. Lookman later had a golden opportunity to further close the gap from the penalty spot, but veteran goalkeeper Simon Mignolet produced a crucial save, deflating Atalanta’s momentum.
“From the first half onwards, we defended the box together with body and soul. Even in the second half, when you know they are coming at you, we held that line and when a ball did get through, I was in the right place,” Mignolet said after his heroic performance.
Despite Atalanta’s relentless pressure, Brugge’s disciplined defense held firm. The frustration boiled over late in the match, with Atalanta captain Rafael Toloi receiving a straight red card for a shove on Maxim De Cuyper.
Juan Cuadrado acknowledged Atalanta’s struggles, saying, "These things happen in football. We took to the field with the desire to do well, but they were perfect on the counter-attacks, while we didn't take advantage of the opportunities we had."
The result capped a disastrous night for Italian football, as Atalanta’s elimination followed AC Milan’s exit at the hands of Feyenoord. Brugge now await either Lille or Aston Villa in the next round, with the draw set for Friday.
