Atalanta 5-1 Genoa: Mateo Retegui bags Hat-Trick as dominant Atalanta crush Genoa

Atalanta took control of the game early, and their pressure paid off midway through the first half when Ademola Lookman delivered a precise cross that found Mateo Retegui, who made no mistake from close range, opening the scoring.

Lookman nearly doubled Atalanta's lead moments later, as a clever pass from Charles De Ketelaere found him in space, but Pierluigi Gollini, Genoa’s goalkeeper, denied him with a fine save.

Halftime: Atalanta 1-0 Genoa

The hosts picked up where they left off in the second half, scoring their second just five minutes in. Ederson's long-range strike was parried by Gollini, but Retegui was on hand to tap in the rebound for his second of the match. Ederson then grabbed a goal of his own, firing a powerful shot into the top corner from outside the box, putting Atalanta firmly in control.

Atalanta extended their lead with a penalty, awarded after a handball by Alessandro Vogliacco. Retegui calmly converted, completing his hat-trick and securing a comfortable margin for his team.

The goals didn’t stop there, as Marten de Roon added a spectacular fourth with a first-time volley that left Gollini stranded, making it 5-0.

Genoa managed a late consolation goal, with Jeff Ekhator slotting past Marco Carnesecchi to make the scoreline slightly more respectable.

Key Performers

  • Mateo Retegui: The star of the show, scoring a hat-trick and leading Atalanta's attack with precision.
  • Ademola Lookman: Provided a crucial assist and was a constant threat throughout the match.
  • Ederson: Dominated the midfield, contributing a goal and playing a part in Atalanta's fluid attacking play.

Atalanta’s commanding win boosts their confidence as they eye a strong Serie A campaign, while Genoa’s poor start to the season leaves them rooted in the relegation zone with much work to do.
