Athletic Bilbao 1-1 RCD Mallorca: Nico Williams rescues point for Athletic Club in lackluster draw with Mallorca

Ernesto Valverde’s Athletic Club maintained their strong head-to-head record against Real Mallorca, extending it to seven matches, although they were compelled to accept a draw in a tense encounter at San Mames on Sunday night.
Following a disappointing midweek result, Athletic sought to rejuvenate their spirits at home against the high-flying Mallorca. However, the first half was marked by a lack of quality, with the visitors creating the best opportunity just seven minutes in.
Takuma Asano delivered a cross aimed at Vedat Muriqi, whose delicate attempt narrowly missed the target, sailing over Unai Simón’s crossbar.
Athletic did manage to create a chance of their own, as the ever-threatening Nico Williams crafted an opportunity on the edge of the box, but his effort went wide of the near post.
The match, which had been uneventful in the first half, came to life shortly after the break when Mallorca took the lead in the 56th minute.
Antonio Raíilo was the scorer, rising above the defense to convert a corner kick delivered by Sergi Darder.
However, the Pirates' advantage was short-lived, as Williams redeemed himself by heading in a deep cross from teammate Andoni Gorosabel at the back post.
The goals opened up the match, with Mallorca creating the best chance in the final moments.
Samu Costa, having made a significant effort to position himself correctly, should have scored but failed to keep his shot from 12 yards low enough to trouble the goalkeeper.
Athletic pressed for a winner in the dying minutes, but Mallorca, recognizing the importance of securing a point in their pursuit of European football, opted to defend resolutely and preserve the draw.
