Athletic Bilbao 2-0 Villarreal: Los Leones solidify top-four spot with commanding victory over visitors

Aitor Paredes and Iñaki Williams each scored to secure a 2-0 victory for Athletic Club against Villarreal, who currently sit in fifth place, allowing Athletic to equalize points with Atlético Madrid in third position.
Athletic had achieved three consecutive wins in LaLiga, including a triumph in the Basque derby, and they took the lead in the 14th minute when Aitor Paredes, unmarked, headed in a corner delivered by Íñigo Ruiz de Galarreta.
Just five minutes later, Villarreal believed they had equalized when Pape Gueye skillfully directed Álex Baena’s free-kick into the far corner. However, VAR ruled that Gueye had been marginally offside, nullifying the goal.
Following their recent 2-1 victory over Real Madrid, the home team pressed forward in search of a second goal against Villarreal. Iñaki Williams attempted a flicked finish, but Diego Conde was quick to react, making a save by tipping the ball wide.
In contrast, Villarreal had a disappointing midweek match, suffering a 1-0 defeat to Pontevedra in the Copa del Rey, a fourth-tier team.
The anticipation for the match was high, as it featured the fourth and fifth-placed teams, with Athletic just three points behind Atlético in third.
In the 68th minute, Williams extended the home side's lead, bringing them level with Atlético, who have played two fewer matches. Oihan Sancet assisted Williams, who finished low into the bottom corner.
At first sight, it appeared to be a commendable finish; however, upon reviewing the footage, it became evident that Conde's studs became ensnared in the ground, resulting in a knee twist as he endeavored to block the shot.
This victory allows Ernesto Valverde’s team to extend their unbeaten streak to 11 matches across all competitions, maintaining their position ahead of the opponents in the LaLiga standings.
For Villarreal, having been eliminated from the Copa del Rey and lacking participation in European competitions this season, the league remains their primary objective as they aim to close the gap on Bilbao in the latter part of the season.
