Athletic Bilbao 3-1 AS Roma (4-3 agg): Nico Williams stars as Athletic Club defeat 10-man Roma to book quarter-final spot

Athletic Club progressed to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League following a 3-1 victory over a 10-man AS Roma at Estadio San Mames, achieving a 4-3 aggregate win and ending the Giallorossi's eight-match unbeaten run.
With strong support from their home fans, Athletic aggressively sought to overturn the deficit they faced after the first leg's closing moments.
Although the initial ten minutes did not yield significant scoring opportunities, Roma made a critical mistake when veteran center-back Mats Hummels received a red card.
After Maroan Sannadi intercepted a misplaced square pass, Hummels attempted to rectify the situation with a desperate sliding tackle, which ultimately failed and led to his early dismissal from the match.
Ernesto Valverde’s squad aimed to take advantage of the situation, but Sannadi squandered a close-range chip, and the threatening Nico Williams struck the post after cutting in from the left.
Despite their numerical disadvantage and limited possession, the Giallorossi managed to hold their ground, leaving coach Claudio Ranieri frustrated when they conceded just before halftime.
In the final moments of the first half, brothers Inaki and Nico Williams exchanged positions, resulting in Inaki’s cross from the left being headed by Sannadi into Nico's path, allowing him to score, albeit with a significant deflection off Angelino.
After the break, Roma regained their composure and continued to thwart the hosts, who struggled to create clear scoring opportunities.
A moment of concern arose when Eldor Shomurodov, the hero from the first leg, came off the bench and broke free from the Roma defense, only to be thwarted at the near post by Mile Svilar.
Normal service was restored shortly thereafter, as Alex Berenguer compelled Svilar to execute a remarkable save to his left, before Athletic finally took the lead on aggregate.
The visitors fell victim to a set-piece, with Berenguer’s corner expertly headed into the far corner by Yuri Berchiche, whose well-placed effort left Svilar with no opportunity to intervene.
The responsibility to attack now rested on a Roma team that had managed only three shots in the first 75 minutes of play, yet they ultimately failed to generate sufficient quality in the attacking third.
The match was effectively decided when Nico Williams scored a third goal, skillfully maneuvering past Gianluca Mancini and delicately lifting the ball over Svilar, thereby securing his team's advancement to the quarter-finals with a fifth consecutive home victory in the UEFA Europa League.
Roma exited the competition despite a consolation penalty from Leandro Paredes in the 93rd minute, as their winless streak in their last 11 UEFA Europa League away matches proved detrimental, leaving the Giallorossi with only Serie A to concentrate on.
