Atletico Madrid 1-0 Getafe: Sorloth on target as Los Colchoneros defeat visitors to go joint-top

Atletico Madrid has equaled the points of LaLiga leaders Barcelona, achieving their 11th consecutive victory across all competitions by defeating Getafe 1-0 at the Estadio Metropolitano. This victory also extended their unbeaten streak against Getafe to an impressive 26 encounters.
Under the management of Diego Simeone, the team has developed a tendency to score late in matches this season, making their slow start in this game somewhat predictable.
However, expectations were higher for Atletico, who managed only a single shot on target in the first half as Getafe's defense remained resolute. Samuel Lino missed two significant opportunities, sending volleys wide after receiving passes from Antoine Griezmann and Rodrigo De Paul.
Despite their lack of offensive threat for much of the half, Atletico should have taken the lead before halftime, but Giuliano Simeone failed to convert a decent headed chance, directing it wide of the goal.
Getafe, for their part, did not pose any threat to Jan Oblak, resulting in a forgettable first half that left both teams in need of a spark to change the dynamics of the match.
Atletico found that spark with the introduction of Alexander Sorloth at halftime, which allowed their attack to become more dynamic. Nevertheless, clear scoring opportunities remained scarce, and their lack of precision nearly cost them when a corner from Getafe was deflected just wide by Jose Maria Gimenez.
Undeterred by this close call, two of Simeone’s substitutes combined to secure the lead in the 69th minute. Angel Correa delivered a precise cross from the right, finding Sorloth at the back post, who skillfully headed the ball back across goal into the bottom corner, ending his three-match goal drought and putting the hosts ahead.
For Getafe, responding to such a setback proved challenging, as they struggled to maintain offensive pressure throughout the match, ultimately succumbing to their 11th defeat in their last 18 away league fixtures.
As a result, the Azulones find themselves only two points clear of the relegation zone, whereas Atleti approaches next week’s match against Barcelona with an equal point total to that of the early season leaders.
