Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid (2-2 agg) (2-4 pens): Los Blancos edge Atleti in dramatic penalty shoot-out to reach Champions League quarter-finals

Real Madrid secured their place in the Champions League quarter-finals with a tense 4-2 penalty shootout victory over city rivals Atletico Madrid after a gripping last-16 second-leg clash ended 2-2 on aggregate at the Metropolitano on Wednesday. Antonio Rüdiger netted the decisive penalty to send the defending champions through as they continue their pursuit of a record-extending 16th European crown.

Atletico had forced extra time with an early goal from Conor Gallagher, while Vinicius Jr. squandered a late chance to level the tie, missing from the penalty spot. The shootout took a controversial turn when Julian Alvarez’s effort was ruled out after he slipped, making two touches on the ball. "I sense that (Alvarez) touched the ball twice and I told the referee," Real goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois told Movistar Plus. "It's not easy to see and it's bad luck for them. We didn't play our best game, but we got through and that's the important thing."

Despite Real holding a 2-1 advantage from the first leg, Atletico struck first just 23 seconds into the match, with Gallagher slotting home Rodrigo De Paul’s low cross. The early goal put Madrid on the back foot, forcing them to break down a well-organized Atletico defense.

Atletico executed a disciplined game plan, sitting deep and threatening on the counter, while Real’s attacking stars—Vinicius Jr., Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham, and Rodrygo—struggled to break through. Alvarez remained a constant threat, forcing multiple saves from Courtois.

Real had their best chance to equalize in the 70th minute when Mbappe’s surging run drew a foul from Clement Lenglet inside the box. However, Vinicius blasted the resulting penalty over the crossbar, leaving Atletico in control.

In the shootout, Mbappe and Bellingham converted for Real, while Alexander Sorloth opened the scoring for Atletico. Alvarez thought he had equalized, but a VAR review confirmed his double touch, leading to confusion in the stadium. Atletico never recovered from the setback, and despite Jan Oblak denying Lucas Vazquez, Rüdiger’s final strike sealed Real Madrid’s victory.

"It hurts because we played a great game," Oblak said. "We lacked a little bit of luck, but the way it ended for us with Julian (Alvarez) penalty hurts a lot... It's a disappointing defeat... Heartbreaking."

Real Madrid will now face Arsenal in the quarter-finals as they continue their European title defense.
