Atletico Madrid 1-0 Sevilla: Ten-man Atletico hold on for vital win over struggling visitors

In the final La Liga match of 2023, Atletico Madrid emerged as the winners with a 1-0 victory over Sevilla. Marcos Llorente's goal early in the second half secured the win for Los Colchoneros. This defeat left Sevilla in a precarious position, hovering just above the relegation zone after only managing one win in their last twelve league matches.

A jubilant atmosphere was evident at the Metropolitano prior to kick-off, as Atletico fans commemorated 12 years since the appointment of the esteemed coach Diego Simeone. This enthusiasm carried onto the field, where Alvaro Morata's shot forced Marko Dmitrovic to make a save in the early stages of the game.

The pressure persisted throughout the first half, but Quique Sanchez Flores' revamped defense, which had previously kept a clean sheet against top-flight opposition after 16 matches, proved to be a formidable obstacle.

In contrast, last season's UEFA Europa League champions struggled to maintain possession during the half and were compelled to defend against numerous set pieces.

However, Atleti appeared fatigued after playing five competitive matches in less than two weeks, necessitating a greater level of creativity in their attacking play during the second half. Diego Simeone promptly made substitutions at halftime, and his decisions quickly yielded positive results.

Within moments of entering the game, Marcos Llorente capitalized on Koke's long pass, executing a fortuitous one-two with a defender before calmly slotting the ball into the far post.

The opening goal prompted an increase in the intensity of play, leading to Sevilla being given a chance to equalize when Caglar Soyuncu was shown a red card for a reckless tackle on Lucas Ocampos with 20 minutes remaining.

Antoine Griezmann, who was on the verge of becoming Atletico's all-time top scorer with just one more goal, expressed his disappointment at being substituted.

However, with the help of defensive reinforcements and the passionate support from the home crowd, Atletico managed to hold on to their lead and secure the victory.

Despite the setback of the red card, Atletico fans will be thrilled to see their team emerge as winners after a demanding schedule. They are aware, though, that they need to put an end to their three-match losing streak away from home in the upcoming year if they want to close the seven-point gap between them and Girona and Real Madrid.
