Atletico Madrid 1-1 Real Madrid: Correa scores late leveller to earn Atleti point in tumultuous derby

A late goal from Angel Correa allowed Atletico Madrid to secure a draw against their city rivals Real Madrid in a tumultuous LaLiga encounter at the Cívitas Metropolitano.

The match commenced in a charged atmosphere, with both teams cautiously assessing each other during the initial stages of the first Derbi de Madrid of the season. Julián Alvarez, making his debut in this rivalry for Atlético, created the first opportunity just nine minutes in, managing to evade Antonio Rudiger and testing Thibaut Courtois from a tight angle.

Real Madrid took 17 minutes to challenge Jan Oblak, with Federico Valverde unleashing a long-range shot that forced the Slovenian goalkeeper into action.

As is typical in high-stakes matches, the first half was marked by numerous robust tackles, resulting in an engaging yet somewhat fragmented contest. Oblak successfully parried Jude Bellingham’s attempt, while Dani Carvajal’s close-range header from a corner was also thwarted.

Despite the absence of the injured Kylian Mbappe, Real Madrid maintained a slight advantage in the first half, and the second half began in a similar vein. A well-executed set-piece allowed Rodrygo to connect with Luka Modric’s pass at the edge of the box, but his shot sailed just over the crossbar.

Although Diego Simeone made early substitutions in the second half, it was Carlo Ancelotti’s side that gained the upper hand, taking the lead shortly after the hour mark through an unexpected contributor.

Vinicius Junior sent in a cross from the right following a misdirected free-kick, which fortuitously found Militao at the back post. The center-back skillfully controlled the ball before delivering a powerful finish, marking a rare goal for him.

The goal led to heightened tensions among the spectators, prompting referee Mateo Busquets Ferrer to suspend the match for nearly 20 minutes due to projectiles being thrown into Courtois' goal area.

Upon returning to the field, Vinícius appeared revitalized and, after skillfully maneuvering past Jose Maria Gimenez, forced Oblak into a remarkable save, deflecting his shot from outside the penalty area around the post.

While Atlético struggled to generate offensive momentum, they managed to surprise Real Madrid deep into stoppage time, continuing their trend of late-game heroics this season. Correa seized a through-ball from Javi Galan and executed a composed finish after evading Courtois.

Initially ruled offside, the goal was later validated by VAR, confirming that he had remained on the correct side of the last defender, resulting in a chaotic celebration. Marcos Llorente received a red card in the ninth minute of added time, yet the match concluded with a thrilling draw.
