Atletico Madrid 1-1 Villarreal: Atleti salvage draw against visitors in heated LaLiga showdown

Atletico Madrid secured a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Villarreal in LaLiga on Saturday, with Samuel Lino's second-half strike canceling out a controversial first-half penalty converted by Gerard Moreno.

The draw marks Atletico’s second consecutive league game without a win, ending their earlier 15-game winning streak in all competitions. Diego Simeone's side, now sitting on 45 points, have lost their top spot to Real Madrid, who lead the standings with 46 points. Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao follow, level on 39 points, while Villarreal hold fifth place with 34 points.

Real Madrid have a game in hand and could extend their lead further when they visit Valladolid later in the day.

Despite dominating large spells of the match, Atletico found themselves trailing in the 29th minute. Gerard Moreno converted a penalty after being fouled in the box. However, Atletico players protested the decision, arguing that Reinildo Mandava had made contact with the ball before colliding with Moreno. Referee Jose Maria Sanchez Martinez reviewed the challenge but stuck to his initial decision, allowing Moreno to put Villarreal ahead with their only shot on target.

Atletico responded with relentless pressure, with forward Julian Alvarez coming close twice. His long-range efforts were brilliantly denied by Villarreal goalkeeper Luiz Junior, who kept the visitors in the lead going into halftime.

Diego Simeone’s halftime changes breathed new life into Atletico’s attack. The breakthrough came in the 58th minute when Samuel Lino tapped in a rebound after Luiz Junior failed to hold Angel Correa’s close-range shot.

Despite Villarreal creating chances on the counterattack, Atletico continued to push for a winner. Pablo Barrios nearly sealed the game in the 85th minute with a thunderous strike from distance, but Luiz Junior made a stunning one-handed save. Antoine Griezmann also came close in stoppage time, narrowly missing a header from close range.

Speaking to Movistar Plus after the game, Samuel Lino shared his frustrations despite scoring the equalizer. "Today we don't leave with a good taste in our mouths," Lino said. "We did everything we could, but today it didn't work out ... It’s frustrating.

"I’ve scored, we got a point, but we thought that Reinildo touched the ball [before the penalty was awarded], but the referee’s interpretation is what stays ..."
