Atletico Madrid 1-3 LOSC Lille: David brace powers Lille to comeback victory over struggling hosts

LOSC Lille executed a remarkable second-half resurgence to secure a 3-1 victory over Atlético Madrid in a match filled with controversy in the Spanish capital.

Mirroring his performance three weeks prior against Real Madrid, Jonathan David netted the decisive goal from the penalty spot following a contentious call by referee Marco Guida.

With the upcoming Derby du Nord against RC Lens in mind, Bruno Génésio made the unexpected decision to rest key players, including Angel Gomes and David, for their encounter at the Metropolitano Stadium.

This choice proved detrimental for the experienced coach, as it led to an early setback within the first 10 minutes. Ousmane Touré, making his first senior start, inadvertently gifted a goal to Atleti with a poorly executed back pass, allowing Julián Alvarez to capitalize and score past Lucas Chevalier.

This goal provided the home team with a much-needed boost, helping them to forget their recent heavy defeat to Benfica in the UEFA Champions League. Although Lille matched Atlético for significant portions of the first half, the Spanish side should have extended their lead before the break.

Alexander Sørloth had a forgettable first half, squandering several excellent opportunities, including a moment in the second minute when he sent the ball out for a throw-in while in a promising position.

Having failed to keep a clean sheet in their last seven matches, Diego Simeone’s squad was not secure with a 1-0 lead. However, after a shaky start to the second half, Lille began to find their rhythm.

A well-coordinated attack transitioned from defense to offense, culminating in a shot from first-half substitute Edon Zhegrova. His curling effort took a deflection and found the corner of the net, beyond Jan Oblak.

This goal marked the beginning of an extraordinary and contentious comeback, adding another chapter to Lille’s enchanting history against teams from Madrid.

Chaos ensued when referee Guida awarded a penalty in the 70th minute following a seemingly harmless sequence of play within the penalty area.

Despite an extensive VAR review that revealed little evidence of a foul, the original decision stood, allowing David to convert the penalty and leaving Los Colchoneros both furious and ultimately vanquished.

David further compounded the distress of the home supporters by scoring again, as a significant deflection redirected his attempt over Oblak, culminating in a remarkable evening for Les Dogues.
