Atletico Madrid 2-1 Borussia Dortmund: Atleti hold on for slender first-leg lead despite late Dortmund barrage

Atletico Madrid is currently ahead in their UEFA Champions League quarter-final matchup against Borussia Dortmund, following a 2-1 win in the first leg at the Metropolitano Stadium. This victory further solidifies Diego Simeone's impressive unbeaten streak of 17 home knockout games in this competition.
After their thrilling victory in the penalty shootout against Inter Milan, Simeone's team started the match strongly and were rewarded with an early goal in the fifth minute.
However, Dortmund's defensive woes were on full display as Ian Maatsen's pass was intercepted by Rodrigo De Paul, who clinically finished with his right foot to extend Atletico's lead.
From that point onwards, the game was largely dominated by Atletico, with further opportunities falling to Antoine Griezmann and Alvaro Morata.
Dortmund struggled to create chances and it took them over 30 minutes to register their first attempt, which Felix Nmecha headed over from Jadon Sancho's corner.
Atletico continued to assert their dominance and eventually doubled their lead through Samuel Lino, who calmly slotted the ball past Kobel after receiving a superb lofted assist from Griezmann.
Despite the impressive performances of Griezmann and Lino, Dortmund's defensive errors were evident once again, particularly in an embarrassing miscommunication between Mats Hummels and Nico Schlotterbeck.
Borussia Dortmund displayed signs of improvement in the second half, with Julian Brandt's shot being deflected wide after a clever pass from Niclas Fullkrug.
Manager Terzic decided to make a change in the forward line by bringing in Sebastien Haller for Fullkrug, as the team aimed to maintain their two-goal lead.
Goalkeeper Kobel had less to do in the second half due to Dortmund's efforts to secure their advantage, but he made a crucial save to deny Lino a second goal from Griezmann's set-piece.
Haller made the impact Terzic desired by scoring a brilliant goal after receiving a pass from Brandt.
Despite Brandt hitting the woodwork with a header in the final moments, Atletico Madrid managed to hold on to their narrow lead heading into the second leg at the Westfalenstadion next Tuesday.
For Dortmund, it was a narrow escape after a poor defensive display in the first half, and they will rely on their passionate fans in the 'Yellow Wall' to help them turn the tie around.
