Atletico Madrid defeat Real Betis 2-0 to break Into LaLiga top four

Atletico Madrid climbed into the LaLiga top four with a convincing 2-0 win over Real Betis at the Civitas Metropolitano, ending Betis’ impressive eight-game unbeaten streak across all competitions.
Both sides came into the match level on 16 points and unbeaten in league play since August, setting up what promised to be one of the weekend’s standout fixtures. But it was Diego Simeone’s side, showing flashes of their classic intensity and control — who dominated from start to finish.
Atletico Madrid made their intentions clear from the opening minutes. Giuliano Simeone, leading the line with confidence, almost set up Julian Alvarez for the opener inside three minutes with a teasing cross that narrowly evaded the striker.

The breakthrough came soon after. Betis failed to deal properly with a long throw-in from David Hancko, and the loose ball fell to Simeone, who unleashed a stunning volley into Pau Lopez’s bottom-left corner. The goal lifted the stadium and underlined Atleti’s early dominance.
Betis responded positively, with Antony’s dangerous cross just missing Cucho Hernandez. Nico Gonzalez, on loan from Juventus, forced Lopez into a sharp save moments later, while Hector Bellerín’s defensive awareness denied Pablo Barrios a second for Atleti.
Despite their efforts, Betis struggled to find rhythm in attack. Their best chance came in the 28th minute when Abde Ezzalzouli tested Jan Oblak, but the Slovenian goalkeeper reacted quickly to parry the shot.
Atleti remained relentless on the counter. Simeone’s clever run and pass set up Alvarez, who fired wide from close range — a miss that could have proved costly. But before halftime, the home side doubled their advantage in style.
During stoppage time, Betis appealed for a foul on Natan by Robin Le Normand in Atleti’s box, but the referee waved play on. The decision proved pivotal as Alvarez led a swift counterattack. His cross from the right appeared harmless until Alex Baena collected it on the left flank, cut inside, and curled a sublime finish beyond Lopez to make it 2-0.
From there, Atletico controlled the game’s tempo, frustrating Betis with disciplined defending and sharp transitional play. The result not only extends their unbeaten run but also propels them into the Champions League qualification spots — a timely boost for Diego Simeone’s men as they look to keep pace with Real Madrid and Barcelona at the top.
Real Betis, meanwhile, will look to regroup after their first defeat since August. Their spirited start to the campaign has kept them in European contention, but this result serves as a reminder of the fine margins that define LaLiga’s upper tier.
Atleti now turn their focus to their next league fixture as momentum builds behind Simeone’s resurgent side.
