Atletico Madrid stage comeback to secure dramatic 4-4 draw against Barcelona in eight-goal cup classic

Atletico Madrid and Barcelona engaged in a thrilling Copa del Rey encounter, with both teams relinquishing two-goal advantages, ultimately resulting in a 4-4 draw in the first leg. Barcelona's 14th consecutive match without defeat sets the stage for an intriguing second leg.

Both clubs entered this match amid a fiercely competitive title race, and the action commenced rapidly as Atletico shocked their opponents by scoring just 50 seconds into the game.

Antoine Griezmann delivered a cross into the penalty area, which was headed back by Clement Lenglet to Julian Alvarez, who was positioned at the back post to finish the move.

Shortly thereafter, Alvarez turned from scorer to playmaker, winning possession in the Barcelona half and advancing forward to deliver an exquisite through ball to Griezmann. The former Barcelona player displayed remarkable poise as he slotted the ball past Wojciech Szczesny.

Hansi Flick's squad appeared visibly shaken and frustrated after conceding two goals within a span of six minutes; however, their reaction was commendable and would have satisfied the German coach.

In the 19th minute, Pedri found the bottom right corner after receiving a cutback from Jules Kounde. The home side equalized just two minutes later when Pau Cubarsi emerged at the far post to head in from Raphina’s corner.

Barca concluded an impressive first half of the match by mirroring their second goal just moments before the interval, as Raphinha's corner was expertly headed in at the far post by Inigo Martinez.

Atletico Madrid emerged with renewed vigor after the break and nearly leveled the score within minutes, as Rodrigo De Paul delivered a precise pass to Griezmann, but the French forward's shot was thwarted by Szczesny.

Lamine Yamal, who had a relatively subdued performance, believed he had won a penalty just prior to the hour mark after being fouled in the area, but his claims were dismissed by the officials.

Los Colchoneros posed a significant threat on the counterattack against Barca's high defensive line, and they thought they had found the equalizer midway through the second half.

Angel Correa penetrated the backline and set up Marcos Llorente, who then assisted Alexander Sorloth for a shot into the net, only for the goal to be disallowed due to offside. In a cruel twist for Diego Simeone's side, Flick's team quickly countered and scored a fourth goal.

Yamal skillfully maneuvered through the Atletico defense and provided a pass to substitute Robert Lewandowski, who easily tapped the ball into an unguarded net.

However, the match was far from over, as Atletico set the stage for an exciting second leg when Llorente struck a powerful shot into the far corner.

The scoring continued as Sorloth shocked the Barcelona supporters with a last-minute equalizer.

Although the return fixture is scheduled for April, the teams will meet again beforehand in LaLiga, promising yet another captivating encounter.
