ATP roundup: Berrettini stuns Djokovic in Doha, Zverev advances at Rio Open

Matteo Berrettini delivered a stunning upset at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open, defeating third seed Novak Djokovic 7-6 (4), 6-2 in the first round in Doha. The victory marked the Italian’s first-ever win against the Serbian in five attempts and his first triumph over a top-10 player since 2023.
Second seed Alex de Minaur secured a 6-1, 7-5 win over Russian Roman Safiullin, while fourth-seeded Daniil Medvedev staged a comeback to eliminate defending champion Karen Khachanov 4-6, 7-5, 6-3. Fellow Russian and fifth seed Andrey Rublev also progressed with a 6-3, 6-4 victory against Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik.
Serbian talent Hamad Medjedovic outlasted sixth-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas in a thrilling two-hour, 45-minute battle, winning 7-6 (6), 5-7, 7-6 (5). Other second-round qualifiers included Portugal’s Nuno Borges, Italy’s Luca Nardi, Dutch duo Tallon Griekspoor and Botic van de Zandschulp, Belgium’s Zizou Bergs, and Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Rio Open
Top seed Alexander Zverev overcame a challenging first set to defeat China’s Yunchaokete Bu 7-6 (4), 6-4 in his Rio Open opener. The German started strong but fell behind 5-4 before saving a set point and rallying to claim the tiebreak. He then secured the only service break of the second set in the penultimate game to seal the victory.
Fourth-seeded Francisco Cerundolo eased past France’s Hugo Gaston 7-6 (9), 6-0, while fifth-seeded Sebastian Baez defeated fellow Argentine Roman Andres Burruchaga 6-3, 7-5. Eighth-seeded Tomas Martin Etcheverry also advanced with a 6-3, 7-6 (1) win over Corentin Moutet.
Meanwhile, lucky loser Camilo Ugo Carabelli shocked seventh-seeded Pedro Martinez with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory. Other players progressing to the next round included Italy’s Luciano Darderi, Bosnia’s Damir Dzumhur, and Portugal’s Jaime Faria.
