ATP roundup: Jenson Brooksby survives match points to advance in Houston

Jenson Brooksby staged a dramatic comeback, saving three consecutive match points in the third-set tiebreak before securing a 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (6) victory over Alejandro Tabilo in the second round of the U.S. Men's Clay Court Championship in Houston.

Facing elimination at 6-3 in the tiebreak, Brooksby held his nerve to win five straight points and claim the match. The American recorded 32 winners compared to Tabilo’s 23 while keeping his unforced errors at 33, significantly lower than his opponent’s 52. In another all-American clash, Colton Smith defeated Ethan Quinn 6-3, 6-4.

Two more matches were scheduled for Wednesday, including an appearance from top-seeded Tommy Paul.

Bucharest Open

Third-seeded Flavio Cobolli of Italy battled past Richard Gasquet, firing 33 winners en route to a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 victory in the Bucharest Open quarterfinals. Despite struggling with six double faults and 45 unforced errors, Cobolli outperformed the Frenchman, who managed just 12 winners and committed 33 unforced errors.

Cobolli’s next challenge will be Austria’s Filip Misolic, who dominated eighth-seeded Camilo Ugo Carabelli 6-3, 6-1. Meanwhile, Francisco Comesana secured a hard-fought 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win over Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut. The match between top-seeded Sebastian Baez and Canada’s Gabriel Diallo was suspended due to rain, with each player having won a set.

Grand Prix Hassan II

Third-seeded Alexandre Muller overcame an early setback to defeat Hugo Dellien 6-7 (5), 6-1, 6-4 in the second round of the Grand Prix Hassan II in Marrakech, Morocco. Muller registered 29 winners against Dellien’s 23 to book his place in the quarterfinals. He will next face Poland’s Kamil Majchrzak, who secured a 7-6 (3), 6-1 victory over Jesper de Jong.

In other second-round action, fourth-seeded Nuno Borges edged Belgium’s Raphael Collignon 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (0), while fifth-seeded Roberto Carballes Baena defeated Otto Virtanen 6-4, 6-4. First-round play also saw No. 7 seed Luciano Darderi claim a 6-4, 6-4 win over Tristan Boyer, and Czech player Vit Kopriva rally for a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory over Borna Gojo.
