Third-seeded Casper Ruud defeated 14th-seeded Jordan Thompson 6-1, 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals of the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell on Thursday in Spain.

Ruud of Norway won the first five games of the first set and overcame four aces from the Australian to win the match in 73 minutes. Ruud will face Italian Matteo Arnaldi in the next round.

Fourth-seeded Australian Alex de Minaur was unable to build on his victory over Rafael Nadal on Wednesday, losing 7-5, 6-2 to 16th-seeded Arthur Fils of France.

Other seeded winners included Greek No. 5 Stefanos Tsitsipas, British No. 12 Cameron Norrie, and Argentina's No. 13 Tomas Martin Etcheverry.

Eleventh-seeded Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain and seventeenth-seeded Fabian Marozsan were less fortunate. The former lost 7-6 (10), 3-6, 6-1 to Serbian Dusan Lajovic, while the latter lost 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 to Argentina's Facundo Diaz Acosta.

Tiriac Open

Marton Fucsovics of Hungary defeated second-seeded Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands 7-5, 6-1 to advance to the third round in Bucharest.

Fucsovics posted five aces and overcame two double faults to defeat Griekspoor in 91 minutes. In the quarterfinals, he will face Frenchman Corentin Moutet, who defeated Portugal's Nuno Borges 6-2, 6-7(3), 6-2.

Wild card Joao Fonseca of Brazil defeated Moldovan qualifier Radu Albot 7-6 (2), 6-2, breaking Albot's serve three times in four attempts.

BMW Open

Second-seeded Holger Rune of Denmark advanced to the third round in Munich after defeating Colombian Daniel Elahi Galan 6-4, 6-2.

Rune won the match in one hour and 39 minutes after serving seven aces and winning 92.9 percent of his first-serve points (26 of 28).

Taylor Fritz, the third-seeded player, Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany, and Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada all won. Fritz defeated Alejandro Moro Canas of Sapin 6-3, 6-1; Struff defeated Botic Van De Zandschulp of the Netherlands 7-6 (0), 6-4; and Auger-Aliassime defeated Taro Daniel of Japan 6-3, 6-2.
