ATP roundup: Sinner, Alcaraz and Tiafoe all survive tough tests

Top seed Jannik Sinner advanced to the quarter-finals of the ABN AMRO Open in Rotterdam after defeating French wild card Gael Monfils 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. On a day filled with surprises, the third and fourth seeds were both eliminated in three sets. Meanwhile, in Buenos Aires, Carlos Alcaraz successfully started his title defense with a victory.

Monfils managed to save three out of five break points and ended the match with a 21-13 advantage in winners, including six aces. However, Sinner demonstrated control over both his first serve, winning 37 out of 49 points (75.5%), and his second serve, winning 17 out of 23 points (73.9%).

In another Round of 16 action, Alexander Shevchenko from Kazakhstan defeated third seed Holger Rune from Denmark with a score of 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. Similarly, Tallon Griekspoor from the Netherlands overcame fourth seed Hubert Hurkacz from Poland with a score of 6-7, 7-6, 7-6 in a match that lasted two hours and 34 minutes.

Moving on to other matches in the Round of 16, sixth-seeded Grigor Dimitrov from Bulgaria defeated Hungary's Marton Fucsovics with a score of 6-3, 7-5. Additionally, Finland's Emil Ruusuvuori emerged victorious against Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff with a score of 6-3, 6-3.

In the IEB+ Argentina Open, top-seeded Carlos Alcaraz from Spain faced a tough challenge in his title defense as he battled against Argentinian qualifier Camilo Ugo Carabelli. Alcaraz secured a 6-2, 7-5 victory after Carabelli initially took a 2-0 lead in the second set.

Despite Carabelli saving two match points and equalizing the score at 5, Alcaraz managed to pull away and secure the win.

Alcaraz's quarter-final opponent will be Italian qualifier Andrea Vavassori, who caused an upset by defeating seventh seed Laslo Djere from Serbia with a score of 6-4, 7-5. Vavassori displayed excellent performance by converting all four of his break-point opportunities.

In another surprising turn of events, the second seed, Brit Cameron Norrie, fell to Argentina's Federico Coria in three sets. Coria secured a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 victory, serving five aces and saving seven out of nine break points. The final match of the day witnessed Argentinian fifth seed Sebastian Baez defeating Italian Luciano Darderi with a score of 6-4, 7-5.

In a thrilling three-hour match in Delray Beach, Florida, Tommy Paul, the third seed, staged an impressive comeback to defeat his fellow American, Alex Michelsen, with a score of 5-7, 6-4, 7-6. Paul showcased his powerful serve by smashing 15 aces and demonstrated his resilience by saving nine out of 11 break points. On the other hand,

Michelsen managed to save six out of eight break points. Paul's next challenge in the quarter-finals will be against Australian player Jordan Thompson, who secured a convincing 6-2, 6-2 victory over qualifier Nicolas Moreno De Alboran.

Meanwhile, the second seed, Frances Tiafoe from the United States, faced a tough battle against Romanian qualifier Radu Albot. Tiafoe eventually emerged victorious with a 7-6, 7-6 win.

Despite squandering a 3-0 lead in the first set, Tiafoe displayed his determination and managed to overcome the challenge. Albot, on the other hand, couldn't hold onto a 5-2 lead in the second set and missed a set point while Tiafoe was serving at 5-6.

In another match, Italy's Flavio Cobolli secured a hard-fought victory over qualifier Zachary Svajda with a score of 6-4, 6-7, 6-2. Cobolli showcased his skills and resilience throughout the match, ultimately emerging as the winner.
