ATP Roundup: Teenager Justin Engel Claims Victory in Kazakhstan Opener

German wildcard Justin Engel, aged 17, triumphed over Hong Kong's Coleman Wong, 20, with a score of 7-5, 6-4 during the opening day of the main draw at the Almaty Open held in Kazakhstan on Monday.

With this victory, Engel has become the youngest player to secure a win at the ATP Tour level since a 16-year-old Carlos Alcaraz achieved the same feat in the first round of the Rio de Janeiro tournament in 2020.

Additionally, Engel is the first player born in 2007 or later to achieve a victory on tour. He faced 10 aces from Wong and successfully saved nine out of ten break points.

In other matches, Croatia's Borna Coric caused an upset by defeating seventh seed Fabian Marozsan from Hungary with a score of 6-4, 7-6(4). German player Maximilian Marterer also secured a win, overcoming Damir Dzumhur from Bosnia and Herzegovina with a score of 7-5, 6-4.

At the European Open, seventh seed Mariano Navone from Argentina required three sets to defeat Brazil's Thiago Monteiro, winning 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(6) in the first round in Antwerp, Belgium.

Navone and Monteiro exchanged leads during the first-set tiebreaker, with Monteiro initially leading 6-5 and serving for match point. However, Navone saved that point and went on to win three consecutive points to clinch the match.

In another match, Navone's compatriot, sixth seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry, emerged victorious against French wildcard Richard Gasquet, winning 7-6(4), 6-4.

Hungarian player Marton Fucsovics dominated Belgium's Raphael Collignon with a score of 6-2, 6-0, while Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena also advanced by defeating Germany's Dominik Koepfer 6-4, 6-0.

At the BNP Paribas Nordic Open, Matteo Berrettini narrowly defeated eighth seed Luciano Darderi in an all-Italian first-round match in Stockholm, with a score of 6-4, 6-3.

Berrettini delivered an impressive performance, hitting 11 aces (while Darderi recorded none) and winning 31 out of 35 first-service points, achieving an 88.6% success rate.

Seventh seed Tallon Griekspoor from the Netherlands triumphed over Russia's Pavel Kotov with a score of 6-4, 6-3. Italy's Lorenzo Sonego narrowly overcame Swiss qualifier Marc-Andrea Huesler, winning 7-6(1), 7-5.

Additionally, Switzerland's Dominic Stricker secured a victory against American Aleksandar Kovacevic, finishing with a scoreline of 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.
