Australia 2-0 China: Australia defeats China, moves closer to 2026 World Cup Qualification

The Socceroos strengthen their World Cup bid with a commanding win in Hangzhou. Australia took a significant step towards automatic qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a convincing 2-0 victory over China on Tuesday. The win, following their dominant 5-1 triumph over Indonesia, keeps Tony Popovic’s side second in Group C with 13 points, three ahead of Saudi Arabia with two matches remaining.

With only the top two teams securing an automatic ticket to North America 2026, the Socceroos remain in a strong position, but their final two fixtures - a home clash against already-qualified Japan and an away test in Saudi Arabia - will determine their fate.

Irvine and Velupillay Secure the Win

Australia wasted no time asserting dominance in Hangzhou. Jackson Irvine broke the deadlock in the 16th minute, capitalizing on sloppy Chinese defending to curl a well-placed shot past the keeper. The FC St. Pauli midfielder showed great composure after his initial attempt was blocked, calmly weaving past two defenders before slotting the ball home.

The Socceroos doubled their lead in the 29th minute, courtesy of a costly mistake from China’s captain and goalkeeper, Wang Dalei. A scuffed shot by Nishan Velupillay seemed routine to collect, but Dalei misjudged the ball, allowing it to slip through his grasp and trickle over the line—handing the Melbourne Victory forward his third international goal in five matches.

China’s Fading World Cup Hopes

Despite trailing, China continued to push forward, backed by over 70,000 roaring fans at the stadium. Brazil-born naturalized player Serginho (Sai Erjiniao) made his international debut in the second half and nearly pulled one back, forcing Australia’s Mathew Ryan into a superb save from distance.

However, China struggled to break through Australia’s disciplined defense. With six points from six matches, they remain bottom of the group but still have an outside shot at third or fourth place, which would qualify them for a further playoff round. Their final fixtures against Indonesia and Bahrain will determine whether they keep their World Cup dream alive.
