Australia captain Hewitt shrugs off De Minaur withdrawal ahead of Davis Cup

Australia's aspirations to conclude their 21-year title drought in the Davis Cup have encountered a setback, as Alex de Minaur (25) has been ruled out of the group stage due to ongoing hip issues.
De Minaur advanced to the quarterfinals of the US Open but was hindered by his hip injury, ultimately losing in straight sets to British player Jack Draper.
Australia's captain, Lleyton Hewitt, confirmed that the world number 11 would be unavailable for their opening match against France in Valencia later today.
"Alex has achieved remarkable feats in the Davis Cup over the past three or four years," Hewitt remarked.
"However, he has been struggling since Wimbledon and has not been close to full fitness. He was eager to participate, but ultimately, the decision was made for him."
Hewitt acknowledged that Australia, which is also grouped with the Czech Republic and Spain, faces a "very challenging group."
Nevertheless, he expressed confidence in his team's ability to advance without De Minaur, highlighting the recent performances of players at the US Open.
Alexei Popyrin notably defeated Novak Djokovic at Flushing Meadows to reach the last 16, while Jordan Thompson and Max Purcell triumphed in the men's doubles event.
"We believe in our capabilities against any opponent," he stated.
"These players have dedicated themselves not only this week in preparation for this tie but throughout the entire year. They will enter the competition brimming with confidence."
Australia, the second most successful nation in Davis Cup history after the United States, has reached the finals in the last two tournaments, finishing as runners-up to Italy last year and Canada in 2022.
The last of Australia's 28 titles was secured in 2003, with Hewitt contributing a singles victory to clinch the title against Spain in the Melbourne final.
