Australia clinch Davis Cup semi-finals spot

Last year's Davis Cup runners-up, Australia, secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over three-time champions Czech Republic, earning a spot in the semi-finals where they will face this year's surprise contender, Finland. The pivotal moment came in the doubles match, with Australia's Matthew Ebden (35) and Max Purcell (25) clinching a 6-4, 7-5 win over Jiri Lehecka (22) and Adam Pavlasek (29), after Alex de Minaur (24) leveled the tie at 1-1 by overcoming Lehecka 4-6, 7-6, 7-5.
Expressing his astonishment, Ebden said, "I've never seen anything like it live. What Alex did to give us the chance to come out here and fight was incredible." Australia's team spirit and fighting culture shone through, as they rallied from a precarious position to reach the semi-finals.
The Czech Republic, with a flawless 9-0 record from the Group Stage, aimed for their first victory over Australia since 1975. However, Tomas Machac (24) gave them an initial 1-0 lead by defeating Jordan Thompson (29) 6-4, 7-5. Despite the Czechs' strong start, Australia remained on course for their 29th Davis Cup title, setting up a clash with Finland in the semi-finals.
Lleyton Hewitt's team, who lost to Canada in the 2022 final, is closing in on the United States, the record holders with 32 titles. The absence of Thanasi Kokkinakis (27) due to an ankle injury didn't deter Australia's determination.
Reflecting on his comeback, De Minaur stated, "It would have been quite easy for me to roll over under the circumstances, but that's just not the type of player I am." His resilience and reputation for thriving in challenging situations contributed to Australia's success.
In the upcoming semi-final, Australia will face Finland, the underdogs who dethroned Canada in the previous round. The Davis Cup quarter-finals will continue with Italy taking on the Netherlands and Novak Djokovic's Serbia meeting Britain in Thursday's double-header.
