Australia smash Olympic record to win women's 4x100 metres freestyle gold

The team comprised of Mollie O'Callaghan, Shayna Jack, Emma McKeon, and Meg Harris, who finished with a time of 3:28.92, just shy of Australia's world record, to beat the United States into second place, with China taking home the bronze.

The victory brought further joy to Australia following Ariarne Titmus' successful defense of her 400m title, where she outpaced Summer McIntosh and Katie Ledecky in a highly anticipated race dubbed the "Race of the century" in Paris.

Australia's dominance in women's sprinting at the Olympics has been ongoing for over a decade, with their reign starting back at the 2012 London Games.

Olivia Wunsch and Bronte Campbell started in the heats on Saturday, but O'Callaghan and Jack replaced them in the final.

O'Callaghan initially lagged behind Yang Junxuan of China in the first 50 meters, but then picked up speed and helped Australia secure the win.

Jack and McKeon further extended Australia's lead, and Meg Harris finished with a strong 51.94 second split.

The United States' team, consisting of Kate Douglass, Gretchen Walsh, Torri Huske, and Simone Manuel, also secured a medal, three years after winning bronze at Tokyo.
