Australia striker Sam Kerr ruled out of Paris Olympics

Australian striker Sam Kerr, known for her talismanic presence on the field, has officially been ruled out of the Olympics.
This decision comes after a serious knee injury disrupted her season with Chelsea almost five months ago. As the captain of the Matildas and one of the most prominent figures in women's football, Kerr's absence will undoubtedly be felt.
In January, Kerr suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament, and her father had already stated months ago that she would not be fit for the Paris Olympics.
However, the confirmation from the national coach, Tony Gustavsson, came only recently when he announced a 23-player squad for upcoming friendlies against China.
The squad announcement made it clear that both Kerr and Amy Sayer, another attacker, would not be available for selection due to their long-term injuries. Instead, they will focus on their rehabilitation programs within their respective club environments.
Kerr's absence is a significant blow to the Australian team, as she holds the record for the most goals scored by an Australian player, with 69 goals in 128 appearances. Her impact on the field will be sorely missed.
In addition to her injury, Kerr has also faced legal issues in Britain. In March, she was charged with a "racially aggravated offence" following an altercation with a police officer. Kerr has pleaded not guilty, and her club, Chelsea, has expressed their unwavering support for her.
Looking ahead, Kerr is expected to face trial in February 2025. Meanwhile, Australia's upcoming matches against China on May 31st and June 3rd will be their final home games before the Olympics in July and August.
