Awer Mabil back in Socceroos frame for World Cup qualifiers

A successful transition to Swiss football has revitalized Awer Mabil (28) and instilled hope in the former South Sudanese refugee for securing a consistent position in Australia's attacking lineup following a challenging period.
Graham Arnold has selected the winger for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Bahrain and Indonesia, recognizing his impressive performance with Grasshoppers.
Despite being well-liked in the locker room and having scored nine goals in 33 appearances for the Socceroos, Mabil faced difficulties during a confidence-draining tenure at Spanish club Cadiz in the 2022-23 season, where he had limited playing time before being loaned to Sparta Prague.
His lack of game time hindered Arnold's ability to include him in the squad, with Mabil's last appearance for the Socceroos occurring nearly a year ago against England.
"It's been a learning experience over the past couple of years," Mabil stated to reporters on the Gold Coast on Tuesday.
"I do not view the last few years as something I wish to change, but rather as a source of motivation to continue enjoying the journey, both the challenges and the successes.
"Mentally, I am stronger now. I have also learned to appreciate the process, which has been the most significant lesson."
Over the past decade, African players have become an integral part of Australian soccer, with Mabil, who was born in a refugee camp in Kenya, being one of the most successful.
A new wave of talent, led by Tanzania-born Nestory Irankunda, an 18-year-old winger at Bayern Munich, is now emerging.
Mabil and Irankunda recently met during a pre-season club match in Europe, and both may take the field for Australia against Bahrain in the Gold Coast on Thursday.
Australian supporters are enthusiastic about Irankunda's potential, but Mabil emphasized the importance of allowing the young player the time and space to develop.
"He will make mistakes, but we must be there to support him. It is essential to let him be himself and continue to showcase his talent," he remarked.
He is my younger brother, and I make an effort to provide him with the best guidance possible.
I advised him, "Observe your surroundings; you have all the resources at your disposal. You are training alongside some of the finest players globally, so focus on your work ethic and seek to learn from their experiences.
Remember, every individual your age would give anything to be in your position."
