AZ Alkmaar 1-0 Tottenham: AZ defeat Spurs to take slender lead in Round of 16 tie

AZ Alkmaar has extended their unbeaten streak to 13 home matches in the UEFA Europa League following a significant 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at the AFAS Stadion in the first leg of their Round of 16 encounter.

For Tottenham, the Europa League represents their final opportunity to end a 17-year drought for major trophies this season, yet they encountered a formidable challenge against Alkmaar, who had previously defeated them 1-0 in the group stage.

Although the first half did not showcase exceptional football, the home team was undoubtedly more satisfied as they headed into halftime with a lead.

The Dutch side faced an early setback when Mayckel Lahdo had to leave the pitch due to injury within the first ten minutes, leading to Denso Kasius stepping in as his replacement. Nevertheless, this misfortune did not dampen their spirits.

The only goal of the first half came in a somewhat fortunate manner for Alkmaar, but they had no reason to complain. A corner kick found Troy Parrott, a former Spurs academy player, at the back post.

His attempt on goal lacked both power and precision, allowing Lucas Bergvall to inadvertently redirect the ball over Djed Spence and into the net.

Ernest Poku, one of AZ’s standout players early in the match, later missed a chance by shooting wide, while Guglielmo Vicario made a crucial save to deny Parrott during a one-on-one situation.

Vicario also successfully blocked Kasius’ close-range effort amid a chaotic sequence in the Tottenham penalty area. In response, Bergvall's header went wide, and Brennan Johnson's shot sailed over the bar during a lackluster half for the visitors.

As the second half commenced, the match continued in a similar vein. Tottenham managed to take the first two shots of the half, but neither posed a threat to Rome-Jayden Owusu-Oduro, while Alkmaar quickly regained control of the game.

Had it not been for Vicario, who skillfully diverted Poku’s low shot to safety, Alkmaar might have found themselves in an even more advantageous position.

Following this, Alkmaar adopted a more cautious approach, seemingly intent on maintaining their slender lead, yet they were never truly challenged by their adversaries.

In fact, Ange Postecoglou’s squad did not manage a single shot on target until the latter stages of the match, resulting in a rather uninspired performance.

They still have the opportunity to rectify this at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next week, but they must deliver a significantly improved performance to achieve that.
