Bagnaia wins Austrian Grand Prix sprint to join Martin at top of championship

Two-time MotoGP champion Francesco Bagnaia, aged 27, secured victory in the Austrian Grand Prix sprint on Saturday, thereby equaling Jorge Martin of Prima Pramac Racing in points at the summit of the world championship standings. This event unfolded as six-time MotoGP champion Marc Marquez experienced a crash.
Bagnaia's triumph at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg elevated his total to 250 points, placing him on par with Martin ahead of the main race scheduled for Sunday.
Martin, who had achieved pole position with a record lap time during qualifying, struggled at the start when the lights turned green, while Bagnaia exhibited aggressive driving from the outset.
Martin incurred a long-lap penalty for not losing the required second after cutting the chicane at turn two, ultimately finishing in second place. He appeared set to secure third until Marquez's crash occurred with four laps to go.
Once Martin served his penalty, Bagnaia was unstoppable, creating a significant lead over the Spaniard and crossing the finish line well ahead of the rest of the competitors.
"Incredible, but the most remarkable aspect is the best lap time we achieved during the race, a 28.7, which is two-tenths faster than last year's pole position time," Bagnaia remarked.
"I am very pleased. The competition was fierce, but I noticed Jorge going wide and thought to myself, remain calm; there could be an issue with the front tire.
"However, everything unfolded perfectly, and I am very satisfied. Let us maintain this momentum."
Aleix Espargaro advanced to finish third, marking his second podium in a sprint. Espargaro, 35, announced in May his intention to retire at the conclusion of the 2024 season.
Other riders who scored points included Enea Bastianini, Jack Miller, Franco Morbidelli, Brad Binder, Marco Bezzecchi, and Pol Espargaro.
