Barcelona clinch Spanish Super Cup after Raphinha stars in El Clásico thriller

Barcelona reaffirmed their dominance in Spanish football with a gripping 3–2 victory over Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup final, played under the lights at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Saudi Arabia. A decisive double from Raphinha proved the difference in a contest that swung wildly from start to finish and showcased the attacking quality of both sides.
The win marked Barcelona’s 16th Super Cup title, extending their record in the competition and continuing an impressive winning streak that has seen them score at least twice in each of their last ten matches across all competitions.
Fast start, early warning signs
Real Madrid began the game on the front foot, pressing aggressively and looking to exploit the pace of Vinícius Júnior on the left flank. The Brazilian forward tested goalkeeper Joan García early on, but Barcelona gradually settled into their rhythm, keeping the ball and building attacks through Pedri and Frenkie de Jong in midfield.

Lamine Yamal’s energy on the right wing caused problems for Madrid’s defence, and Barcelona soon began to dominate possession. Raphinha, lively throughout the opening exchanges, went close twice before finally making the breakthrough.
Raphinha strikes, Vinícius responds
After wasting a clear opening, Raphinha made no mistake moments later. Cutting in from the right, he fired a low shot across Thibaut Courtois and into the bottom corner to give Barcelona a deserved lead.
Madrid responded with individual brilliance. Vinícius Jr. drifted inside from the left, nutmegged Jules Koundé and calmly slotted past García to restore parity and ignite the contest.

Barcelona regained control just before half-time when Robert Lewandowski timed his run perfectly, latching onto Pedri’s through ball before lifting a composed finish over Courtois. However, Real struck back almost immediately. Gonzalo García reacted quickest after a header rebounded off the crossbar, finishing well despite falling backward to make it 2–2 at the break.
Tighter second half, decisive moment
The second half was more tactical, with both teams cautious not to concede. García and Courtois were called into action at either end, keeping out efforts from Rodrygo and Yamal as the match settled into a tense rhythm.

The turning point arrived just after the hour mark. Raphinha picked up the ball outside the box and struck a right-footed effort that took a wicked deflection off Raúl Asencio, wrong-footing Courtois and nestling into the net. It was not the cleanest strike, but it crowned another outstanding performance from the Brazilian winger, who has now scored seven goals in his last five games.
Late drama and Barcelona resilience
Xabi Alonso introduced Kylian Mbappé in the closing stages in a bid to force an equaliser, and Madrid threw bodies forward. Barcelona were reduced to ten men when Frenkie de Jong was shown a red card for a high challenge on Mbappé, increasing the pressure in the final minutes.
Despite their numerical disadvantage, Barcelona remained composed. Marcus Rashford missed a chance to seal the game on the counter, while Asencio headed straight at García in stoppage time, but Madrid could not find a way through.
When the final whistle sounded, Barcelona were left celebrating a hard-fought but deserved victory that underlined their status as Spain’s most in-form side.
What it means
The Spanish Super Cup has often been a predictor of domestic success, with recent winners going on to claim La Liga. For Hansi Flick, this trophy adds to a growing collection and further strengthens belief that his Barcelona side can challenge for major honours this season.
For Real Madrid, the narrow defeat will sting, but their attacking threat and late push showed they remain strong contenders as the campaign progresses.
