Barcelona 1-0 Rayo Vallecano: Lewandowski's first-half sees Barca go top of LaLiga

Barcelona took advantage of both Madrid teams dropping points and ascended to the top of the LaLiga standings after securing a 1-0 victory over Rayo Vallecano, marking their 10th win in the last 12 matches.
With the top two teams failing to secure victories over the weekend, Barcelona recognized the importance of a win prior to kick-off to enhance their title aspirations. Hansi Flick’s squad dominated the first half in search of the opening goal, with Raphinha narrowly missing the target after connecting with Alejandro Balde’s cutback.
Shortly thereafter, the hosts were awarded a chance to take the lead when Inigo Martínez was fouled in the penalty area by Abdul Mumin. Following an extensive VAR review, Robert Lewandowski successfully converted the penalty, marking his 20th league goal of the season.
Lamine Yamal had an opportunity to extend the lead just after the half-hour mark when he seized a loose ball in the box, but his shot was directed straight at Augusto Batalla.
Rayo Vallecano did not test Wojciech Szczesny until the 37th minute, but the Polish goalkeeper was able to deflect Randy Nteka’s attempt around the post with a strong save.
Just before halftime, the Madrid side nearly surprised the Barcelona supporters when Jorge de Frutos broke through the defense and scored, but the goal was disallowed due to Nteka being offside and interfering with a defender.
Flick would have sought an improvement from his team after Rayo nearly equalized just before the break. His wishes seemed close to being fulfilled within ten minutes of the second half when Pedri embarked on a remarkable run into the box, but Lewandowski dragged his cutback wide.
The away team began to assert more influence in the match, limiting their hosts for a significant portion of the second half. It was not until the 71st minute that Barcelona tested Batalla again, as Raphinha capitalized on a rebound, but his goal-bound shot was met with an exceptional save from the goalkeeper.
