Barcelona 4-0 Real Sociedad: Barca ease past 10-man visitors to reclaim top spot in LaLiga

Following a promising beginning, a red card issued to Aritz Elustondo became a turning point in Real Sociedad's 4-0 loss, as they were unable to contain a dominant Barcelona, who ascended to the top of the LaLiga standings.

Although neither team managed a shot in the opening 15 minutes, both had significant chances to score early in the match.

Shortly after the match commenced, Sociedad's celebrations were abruptly halted when Sergio Gomez’s deflected shot was disallowed due to an offside in the build-up. This allowed Barcelona the opportunity to strike first, but Pedri’s attempt was blocked and looped onto the roof of the net after Alex Remiro was pressured into a clearance.

The visitors appeared to be in good form, hitting the crossbar through Orri Oskarsson, who, despite being one-on-one, was ultimately flagged offside.

However, Los Txuri-urdin soon found themselves at a disadvantage, as just moments after that opportunity, they were reduced to ten men. A swift run from Dani Olmo left Sociedad vulnerable, prompting captain Elustondo to bring down the Barcelona player, leaving referee Alejandro Quintero Gonzalez with no alternative but to issue the red card.

Confronting a weakened opponent for the first time this LaLiga season, Barcelona took the lead seven minutes later when Lamine Yamal evaded a defender before passing to Olmo, who set up 23-year-old Gerard Martin to score his inaugural goal in professional football with a side-footed finish at the back post.

By the 30-minute mark, the hosts had doubled their advantage, courtesy of another assist from Olmo. This goal, however, was somewhat fortuitous, as Olmo's shot from the edge of the box found the net after deflecting off Marc Casado—who also celebrated his first goal for Barcelona—and the left post.

The away team faced an uphill battle and struggled to create opportunities, with Pedri striking the frame of the goal from distance shortly after the restart.

If the match was not already decided, two goals within a five-minute span in the second half sealed the outcome.

Ronald Araujo was the first to respond when Robert Lewandowski’s header from a corner was deflected, and after scoring his inaugural league goal of the season, the defender became a playmaker as his long-range effort was redirected into the net by the Polish forward.

Lewandowski squandered a chance to secure a second goal with a poorly timed header in the final moments, but this ultimately had no bearing on the outcome, as the victory was already assured.

Now unbeaten in 15 matches across all competitions (W12, D3), Hansi Flick’s Barcelona has ascended to the top of the LaLiga standings, surpassing Atletico Madrid by one point and leading Real Madrid by three points in third place.

A challenging afternoon for Sociedad concludes with a somewhat expected defeat—marking their 26th loss in 27 league encounters away from home—leaving Imanol Alguacil’s team in ninth place within a tightly packed midtable.
