Barcelona 6–1 Olympiacos: Fermin Lopez hat-trick and Rashford double lead Flick’s men to Champions League rout

Barcelona bounced back in style on Tuesday night, thrashing Olympiacos 6–1 at the Olympic Stadium to reignite their Champions League campaign.
Fermin Lopez was the star of the show, scoring a brilliant hat-trick, while Marcus Rashford bagged a brace to continue his fine European form under Hansi Flick. Teenage sensation Lamine Yamal also got on the scoresheet from the penalty spot, becoming the youngest player to reach 25 Champions League appearances at just 18 years and 100 days.

It was Barcelona’s most dominant European performance since their iconic 6–1 comeback win over Paris Saint-Germain in 2017.

Lopez and Rashford fire Barcelona into control

Lopez opened the scoring early, showing his poacher’s instinct in the seventh minute. After Yamal’s shot was parried by Olympiacos goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis, Lopez pounced to guide the rebound past defenders on the line.

Half an hour later, the 20-year-old midfielder doubled his tally, latching onto a smart through ball from debutant Dro Fernandez. With a deft cut inside, he curled a left-footed strike into the far corner to make it 2–0.

Olympiacos thought they had pulled one back early in the second half when Ayoub El Kaabi’s header found the net. But after a VAR review, the goal was disallowed for offside, and the visitors were instead awarded a penalty for an earlier handball by Eric Garcia. El Kaabi stepped up and converted off the post to make it 2–1.

Just three minutes later, Olympiacos were reduced to ten men after Santiago Hezze was shown a second yellow card for catching Marc Casado in the face — a moment that completely shifted the momentum.

Yamal, Rashford and Lopez complete the rout

Barcelona took full advantage of their numerical superiority. Rashford was brought down by Tzolakis inside the box, allowing Yamal to calmly slot home from the spot for Barcelona’s third.

The Catalans were relentless. Rashford struck twice in quick succession, first with a well-placed low finish in the 74th minute, then with a powerful strike after controlling a long diagonal pass with a superb first touch.

Two minutes later, Lopez completed his hat-trick with a thunderous shot from the edge of the box, becoming the first Spanish player to score a Champions League hat-trick for Barcelona.

Rashford’s brace took his tally to four goals in three European games for his new club, a feat he managed only once in 37 Champions League appearances with Manchester United.

Flick praises his players’ hunger and unity

Speaking after the game, head coach Hansi Flick praised his team’s intensity and composure. “Rashford played really well tonight,” Flick said. “It’s not easy to lead the line as a number nine, but he gave everything — he scored, created chances, and pressed hard. And Fermin’s performance speaks for itself. He’s growing with every game.”

Flick also credited the team’s La Masia graduates, with seven academy products starting the match. “The connection these boys share is special,” he added. “They’ve played together for years, and you can feel that chemistry on the pitch.”

Dro Fernandez shines on European debut

One of the night’s standout stories was 17-year-old Dro Fernandez, who marked his Champions League debut with an assist for Lopez’s second goal.

Born in Nigran, Galicia, Fernandez joined Barcelona from Val Minor in 2022 and has risen rapidly through the ranks. With Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha and Dani Olmo still recovering from injuries, Flick opted to start the young attacker — and he didn’t disappoint.

Fernandez is the latest La Masia talent to break into the senior team, and his calmness on the ball hinted at a bright future. “He showed real confidence,” Flick said. “He understands our system and plays with maturity beyond his age.”

Barcelona back on track ahead of El Clasico

The victory moves Barcelona up to six points after three group-stage games, following a 2–1 win over Newcastle and a narrow 2–1 loss to PSG. Olympiacos remain bottom with just one point and have now lost 12 consecutive Champions League away matches.

With El Clasico looming on Sunday, Flick’s side head into the clash full of confidence and rediscovering their attacking flair at the perfect time.
