Barcelona coach Hansi Flick backs VAR decision in victory over Rayo Vallecano

Barcelona's head coach Hansi Flick has expressed his support for the video assistant referee (VAR) system in light of the controversy that arose during Monday's LaLiga match against Rayo Vallecano. The match saw Rayo Vallecano express their frustration over several contentious decisions.
In the first half, Barcelona forward Robert Lewandowski converted a penalty kick to secure the winning goal, following an extensive VAR review that identified a foul in the penalty area that the on-field referee initially overlooked.
Rayo Vallecano also voiced their dissatisfaction after being denied a penalty and were further incensed when a potential equalizer from Jorge de Frutos was disallowed in the 42nd minute, a decision they deemed excessively harsh.
"I haven't rewatched the incidents but I will always stand by the VAR. We have the VAR and I believe in the VAR, that's all I can say about it," Flick told Movistar Plus.
"We are very happy for the three points because it was very difficult game for us to win against a great opponent. Rayo are in a good form, playing very well. It was a tough game for the players and I'm proud of them."
The events that transpired on Monday have intensified the ongoing discussion regarding officiating in Spain, particularly as Barcelona's rivals, Real Madrid, have engaged in a dispute with the Spanish Football Association and LaLiga.
Following the weekend's matches, where both Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid failed to secure victories, Monday's outcome enabled Barcelona to ascend to the pinnacle of the league table. They are currently tied with Real Madrid at 51 points but hold the advantage due to a superior goal difference.
Atletico Madrid is positioned just one point behind both teams, while Rayo Vallecano, having suffered their first league defeat since early December, occupies the sixth spot with 35 points.
"Everyone is happy and I think we played well, but we can also do better. I think it was a great success for us, winning here today and moving to first place, it's very positive," Flick said.
"However, I'm not a fan of looking at the table, we are still in February and there's a long way to go. But I'm happy for the players. Their mentality is to fight until the end and we will take it one game at a time."
