Barcelona cruise past Napoli to advance into Champions League quarter-finals

Barcelona secured a 3-1 victory over Napoli, thanks to two early goals, which propelled them to a 4-2 aggregate lead in their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie. This defeat eliminated the Partenopei from the European competition, marking the third time since 2020 that they have been knocked out after a 1-1 first-leg draw.

Xavi Hernandez's young players took center stage at the beginning of the match. Lamine Yamal and Fermin Lopez both had opportunities to score but missed the target.

Pau Cubarsi made an excellent challenge to stop Victor Osimhen from advancing. Cubarsi then made a brilliant pass to release Fermin, but he couldn't find the goal with his shot.

However, on the third attempt, the 20-year-old managed to score a composed finish from Raphinha's pass.

The home team quickly doubled their lead when Yamal started a fast break and passed the ball to Raphinha, whose shot hit the post and bounced into Joao Cancelo's path for a goal.

Napoli needed a response and they got one when Amir Rrahmani scored a precise finish after receiving a pass from Matteo Politano.

There was a setback for Barcelona as Ronald Araujo suffered a cut above his eye, but Marc-Andre ter Stegen made a great save to deny Giovanni Di Lorenzo's header and ensure that Barcelona reached halftime without conceding any more goals.

Francesco Calzona's team issued another warning to Barcelona early in the second half when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia found some space on the edge of the penalty area. However, the Georgian player's attempt went agonizingly wide.

While Raphinha managed to force Alex Meret into making an awkward save, Napoli was putting pressure on the home team. This led Xavi to bring in the experience of Sergi Roberto and Oriol Romeu in the 60th minute.

The moments of uncertainty continued as Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa's shot was blocked after a less than convincing header from Cancelo. On the other end, Yamal had a goal disallowed for being offside.

After Jesper Lindstrom missed a great opportunity for the visitors with a wide header, Barcelona finally found some breathing space. Ilkay Gundogan and Roberto combined to set up Robert Lewandowski for an easy finish.

This victory ensured that Barcelona would reach the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time since the 2019/20 season. It also extended their unbeaten run to nine games and put an end to Napoli's six-game unbeaten streak, which was their longest of the season so far.
